I tend to give the character a similar appearance to myself but related to the game. So kind of a mix between me and an original character. So possibly like an alternate me?

I try to make it as close as to how I look in real life.

I try to make it look like a pre-exsisting character I like.

I try to make it look like an original character I made.

I try to make something that looks funny.
