Cant transfer data to a new system?

It's there on the website in the part I quoted, 2nd sentence.

Wait, the part you quoted only talks about how there will be a specific solution for backups, not save-transfers. The solution for save-backups was talked about already in the Direct as you mentioned but I don't think they said transfers will be possible in any way. The only thing the quote from the US website says about transfers is they won't be possible, not that there will be a specific solution for NH, which is only stated on the German one for some reason.

I don't think transfers in that sense is what will be allowed (switch to switch). It's about recovering the backed up savedata from the server, and you'd be transferring that onto any Switch you want.

Maybe I should have explained the stuff from the German website better:

1: This talks about save-backups not being available.
2: This talks about there being a specific solution for Switch Online users later on.

3: This talks about save-transfers between consoles not being available. (Switch-to-Switch)
4: This talks about there being a solution for users later on this year to transfer their AC:NH user and save-data to another console.

So based on the official German website Switch-to-Switch save-transfers will also be possible later this year. The specific solution for NH is specifically mentioned for Switch-to-Switch save-data transfer and not just for save-backups.

I could have made my life a lot easier if I would have looked at the UK website first: https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch/Animal-Crossing-New-Horizons-1438623.html
Important notes regarding save data
- This game does not support the Save Data Cloud functionality of Nintendo Switch Online. However, the ability to recover Animal Crossing: New Horizons save data from the server in the event of console failure, loss or theft will be available to Nintendo Switch Online members later this year.

- This game does not currently support the ability to transfer your save file from one Nintendo Switch console to another. However, a function specific to Animal Crossing: New Horizons to move users and save data to another console is planned for later this year.

This is very interesting that they'd have different wording in the US vs Europe.

It still could mean that they're replacing the function of transferring a save file from one Switch to another with the ability to transfer the save from the cloud to that other Switch. I can't understand how they would do it without it being about pulling from their cloud saves. Otherwise, they'd need to do a whole system update to change the way that Switch transfers profiles and savedata.

The funny thing about that is that console-to-console transfer is available to everyone, not just Online subscribers. So does that mean they will make an option for downloading cloud saves for non-subscribers? That would be VERY good.

I spoke with someone at Nintendo's customer support about this over text message. If you haven't already, I would suggest contacting Nintendo about this because their support staff will share your feedback with their higher-ups. (I tried their instant chat at first, but they didn't seem to understand my concerns.) I'm sure Nintendo is already paying attention to indirect feedback, but I think more direct feedback is really good too.

I have to wait until my birthday in April to play this because my boyfriend is getting my a Switch Lite. I'm still excited about the game and getting a new system, but it's really disappointing that I won't be able to start playing on our current Switch and just transfer my island next month.

Yes, they could use the backup option for save-transfers but I'm not sure how Nintendo will do it in the end. The wording "user and save-data" also makes it sound to me like there will different options between moving the entire island or just a specific character over.
The save-transfer option is usually available to everyone and not just Switch Online users, so it would make sense to also make it available to everyone for NH but then I doubt it would use the save-backup function.

this feature really irritates me. i don't have a switch of my own, so when i buy the game it'll be on the family switch that rarely gets used. though i'm interested in getting a switch lite at some point so i don't have to keep taking the family switch when i travel to and from uni

You should probably read my message above yours: The UK website states the following: https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch/Animal-Crossing-New-Horizons-1438623.html

While the feature might not be ready in time for your case it will be later on.

Yeah you're right. It sounds like they will need to transfer all the user profiles from the first switch along with the save data to maintain the integrity of the island save data. Another solution might be to 'strip out' any other profiles from the island when transferring it to the other Switch, but because of the wording it sounds like they're all going together.

The way that the Switch transfer works currently is by selecting one profile at a time to transfer. It seems to me like they will need to rework the way that the system does transfers by allowing bulk profile transfer.

I can appreciate how complicated this problem is to solve for Nintendo! And that makes me a bit less irritated by it lol
