Hi all.
I have decided to try and catch the fly as I haven't got one in my museum yet, my concern is that obviously leaving out trash has a negative impact on the Island and as I finally got a 5 star Island I don't want to drop from that while leaving out the trash, I've left an old tire all afternoon/evening without any luck, if I left the tire out for a few days, how negative an impact would that have on my Island? Thank you.

Speaking from experience, if you don't have any other significnt clutter and if all of the other requirements are sufficient (enough trees, flowers, decorations, etc.), a single piece of trash isn't going to ruin your 5-star ranking. I've left a can in a specific spot for ages just to get flies more reliably and it never affects anything.

Thank you for your tips, I've still not caught it, not even seen it let alone caught it. I'll keep trying though.

Yeah I always wonder if it will effect my score when I place things on the grass to help catch bugs like the rotten turnip to catch ants. I have also had to cut trees to make them stumps to be able to catch certain bugs too but I am having no luck spawning them at all.

Putting pieces of trash (cans/tires) in several different places main locations on the island, you're bound to run across one before too long as you play everyday. Just place the trash and play normally, and you'll come across one sooner or later.

There is a spawn limit for bugs, so if you have lots of other bugs in your town (Beetles, Butterflies, Mantises, etc), it will prevent flies from spawning. If you wanted to dedicate your playtime to catching one, it would be best catch or scare these away

I've managed to catch the ant and the bugs from the tree stumps so far, just the fly I'm having trouble with. I'll catch it eventually. Hope you manage to catch yours.

Thank you, will definitely give this a try.

I don't think it really matters, but I feel like I have better luck spawning flies with cans than with tires. If you don't spawn one soon, maybe after the summer beetles leave for the season you'll catch one.

Edit Oh! Idea! maybe you can get one to spawn on a Nook Island in the evening if you remove everything? You could scare bugs off that spwan. Bring multiple trash with you and walk around or go fishing while you wait.

Tires dont spawn fly's. I thought it was only cans and rotten turnips??? Maybe this will help :) I only used 1 turnip anyways when I caught it.

I'd say cans and boots are more reliable than rotten turnips if someone's strictly targeting flies. I tended to get ants way more frequently than flies when I tried the rotten turnip in the past. I can't say with certainty the likelihood of spawning one or the other, but using the trash eliminates the competition.

I brought a rotten turnip to a mystery island. Cut down all trees and destroyed the flowers so not much else could spawn. Got one right away.

sorry im late to this...i used the boot to catch a fly. it showed up the same day that i put it out.

rotten turnips is the way to go. I just leave one in the grass where I often walk by.

I am a little late to the thread but I waited ages before trying to get a fly for the museum and when I finally got round to it I put 2 boots, 2 cans and 2 tyre's on a small open area grass area and saw nothing for days then one day as I was doing something else around that area something caught my eye and on further inspection it was a fly that I finally managed to catch and donate to the museum. I have 2 islands and it took a few days for me to notice a fly buzzing around the trash on both occasions for some reason. Good luck I hope you mange to catch one and get rid of that horrible looking trash lol

I've still not managed to catch it, but then it seems everytime I play just lately it rains which is not helping. Thank you for all your tips though, I'll keep trying.

Hi LH77,

I know it's disheartening but after I dumped my trash on the grass close to a flower bed area hoping it attracted flies more it still took days to finally spot a fly as initially I was running around to the spot constantly thinking there should be flies at some point but nope so i tried to forget about it and only ever looked in on the trash when I was doing my daily island chores then one day I noticed something I thought was the size of a bee and went over to investigate and there was one fly which i took my time catching in case it got away and it could be days before I saw another one lol I have read somewhere about trying to get rid of other insects spawning to get the fly to spawn faster but I have a ton of trees, flowers and bushes on my island and I felt that would be even harder work so I left it to fate-) Good luck I am sure you will see one eventually if you just leave the trash out for as long as it takes..

I can’t imagine it would drop your rating down with just one piece of trash, but if it does just pick the trash up after the fly is caught and your rating will go back up.

I actually have a couple of trash items around my town. The one that I see the fly most often is in the cans.
Rain doesn’t help a lot, but if you don’t mind time traveling, I would skip though it.
