Give me a tent, build me a home, no interest, not have to pay for utilities? Give me a whole smartphone? Allow me to sell all the bugs and fish to his sons? Let me play god with the entire island? Dictate where my neighbors live and how their yards look? Yeah... he's a good guy.

I also agree that Tom Nook seems like a really good person, but I admit that I still think the "shady/greedy Tom Nook" jokes can be pretty funny, even if they're not really canonically accurate. If it's taken any more seriously than that though, like those "the TRUE VILLAIN of Animal Crossing?!?!?" videos, then... nah.

He was way more devious and sassy in the original game, but you could say that about the villagers too. The fact he gives you a house and lets you pay rent at your own pace is really nice : I really like how his character's portrayed, especially involving Sable and his lil' nephews. He's a good tanuki and I love him.

At the risk of sounding presumptuous - if you think Nook is a money-hungry mob boss-style villain, then I'm afraid for the people you encounter IRL. Nook is cartoonishly nice and kindhearted for a property owner and landlord. Especially as the series goes on. He ropes you into debt in the first games, but you're welcomed to never pay it off and there's no interest to speak of. He just gives you a decent place to stay without asking for more than the price of upgrades and about 40 minutes of work at his shop.

I think Nook was mostly villanized in the first 2 games (and honestly, mostly the 1st one). After that, I’d say he’s more helpful and good spirited towards you.

when i was a kid, i thought he was an evil greedy capitalist because he wanted you to pay what felt like an absurd amount of money for a house 🤪

but now I see that his loan process is extremely generous and that bells are probably based off of yen so that's why the prices seem so expensive?? i still got somethin to say about how much more expensive each upgrade is from the last in acnh, and the fact that you must upgrade each room in a specific order...but i know that's just a game mechanic

I mean he doesn’t pester me about never paying him back for any of the last loan payments. Ever.

I remember Nintendo Power naming Tom Nook the villain of the year for 2002, so that's good enough for me to declare him a villain.

In all seriousness, though, nah, Tom Nook is fine. He upgrades your house and makes it so your loan payments don't ever have to be paid off if you want, which is something we can only dream of in the real world, lol. The later games in the series have done a better job of drawing out the good qualities of Nook as well.

He's just a love to hate kinda guy and I think it's mostly lighthearted. There's not really a villain in AC, so we have to take our frustrations out on someone haha. I don't think he's ultimately a bad guy though. Nicer than most landlords I've encountered.

He sells you a house that you can pay for at your own pace with 0 interests and expand freely, lets you choose where to put every villager house, gives you an smartphone for free, and even gives you some tips on how to make bells... I'd say he's a good guy.

Since my experience with him is from NH and NL I'd say he is a good guy.

I think the first few games he felt kind of like a criminal! He's less of an evil landlord now and more of a dude behind a desk which I think is awesome :D

Tom Nook is not a good or bad guy, he's just a dumb guy.
He demands that you pay him back...
using money that he himself gave you in exchange for random fruits and seashells...
...with no deadline.
Villagers in Population Growing (and Phyllis too) sometimes comment on how nobody actually pays Tom back, because he sets no deadlines. Everyone just takes advantage of his dumb hospitality and takes a house without ever paying off the loan.
What we don't know is how his business stays intact under this naive and ridiculously exploitable model.
It's just a game, I guess, it doesn't need to make sense.
