Obviously AC:NH doesn't have many furniture items that are iconic to the AC series, the museum is lacking an art exhibit as of now, there's no Redd in sight, Gyroids are not around, diving is gone etc. So my question is, do you think that they always planned to release the game like this with future updates that might add in this content or do you think the release date was too soon for them to fit everything and they already pushed the game back once, so they released it as is? If they had put in all this missing content, would the game have been released even later?

It could have been released later, but I think there's enough to keep non-TTers going, and unfortunately, the game is clearly not designed to cater to TTers.

Being honest, I think it came at the perfect time. Without it, I might have gone mad under this COVID-19 lockdown by now.

It's definitely not designed for TTers. Luckily I'm not one, but I could see why many TTers would be disappointed. But yeah, I'm sooooo glad it came out when it did.

I think it's fine, how it is.

I think it's great how it is as well, I'm just wondering if it came out later, would there have been more included in the initial release?

Obviously the longer they keep the game in development, the more features they can add in it. But I don't want to wait any longer and what with all the stuff going around, there's no better time to release than now.

Big agree with the above. I'm glad it came out when it did, and I'm personally having fun with what's available instead of stressing about what isn't. They probably could have delayed it, but that would have only benefitted TTers while everyone suffered from not having the cherry blossom or Bunny Day events.

Honestly, this feels like an incomplete game. But I'm not gonna lie, it does give me something to do during the day and a fun interactive way for me to play with my friends online during this chaos in the world right now.

But I agree, I want back the diving and the art exhibit. Maybe when you go up the stairs, they'll put an art gallery up there or a coffee shop.

To me it doesn't feel incomplete, but rather that they put their priorities in other/new things rather than old things. It's definitely perfect for the times we're in though.

I don't think this game was ready to come out but nothing else was available to fill the gap so here we are. I would rather have it now and receive updates (so long as a finalized version comes out on a cartridge I can buy later), than have nothing to play.

New features can always be added in updates

I dont like the way that it is set up. TTing aside, with every AC game I had a lot of things to look forward to. For instance.... In New Leaf knowing about the Dream Suite, the Cafe, Club 101, Gracie's, etc. gave me motivation to advance. It also made it easier to plan out my town. I knew to save this spot for the cafe and that other spot for the police station, etc.

With New Horizons nothing is certain. We can speculate that all of these things will eventually make a return, but unfortunately none of us really know for sure when they will be added or even if they'll be added at all. So yeah... it's pretty disappointing to not have anything big to look forward to, really...

But that's just my opinion. Either way, I'm still enjoying the game.

It's definitely not designed for TTers
As someone who does TT, I enjoy the game how it is. Sure, it's missing a bunch, like certain shops from New Leaf for example, but that doesn't bother me that much right now to be honest, as I have lots to do, such as designing my island and house, collecting items etc.

Not sure if the game would be different if they would have delayed it again. I do believe however that they will gonna add more in form of updates in the future to keep the game (and it's hype) alive.

I'm flabbergasted they haven't overhauled how multiplayer works. Did they really think it wasn't needed, or was it time-saving to just copy over from the previous games? Did they not have enough time and resources to develop this game?

Also... did they not playtest this game?? Some surprising bugs making it through doesn't really seem up to Nintendo quality.

I ventured over to a competitor board while TBT was down yesterday, and they were acting like the sky was falling. So many threads about how bad the game is, and rarely something good. In my opinion, this game is incredible. Of course, it's "missing" a bunch of stuff right now, but I'm okay with that. I'd really love to have diving make a return, and maybe art (hated the idea that I had to use a guide to confirm a real or fake piece), but other than that, the game is great.

To answer the question in the OP, this game couldn't have come out a better time; finished or otherwise.

I feel like I still have a lot of things to do (I don't TT), especially with the Bunny Day and Sakura events! I'm happy with them releasing more features in the future because right now I'm preoccupied with my 10th villager still unpacking her boxes today, finding Bunny Day DIYs and Sakura DIYs, then once that's done I'll resume fishing for the new fish, building more inclines because I can only have one a day etc...

With the KK Slider concert being the main "story" that we got, I feel like there's definitely more coming since we could get it at just 3 stars. They made the ocean so clear and we can see through the water, so I think diving will be available in the future.

I absolutely adore the game. But being in development for like seven years should produce less glitchy work and there is little excuse not to be brimming with content. While I appreciate the commitment to updates, the base game is important, too.

Some of it feels unfinished to me, but it's not in the content sense. It's mostly in the amount of bugs and glitches sense.

I think they probably intended to release the game this way. They WANTED to do a "living" game this time. If you look at it, the game industry as a whole is kinda going in that direction. It's partly so they can release a game sooner, but it's also the fact that it simply makes player engagement with the game longer. It makes sales stay up for the game longer.

Knowing Nintendo, it was probably also an experiment too. Nintendo is probably the most experimental developer in the entire video game industry. Look at all of the crazy things they've done, like making a scale a video game peripheral (Wii Fit) and cardboard a video game peripheral (Nintendo Labo).

I am so glad it came out exactly when it did! Quarantine would be a lot harder without it, it's nice to have something to look forward to every morning. It was honestly a miracle that the release date was the very last day my local store was open. I don't TT so to me that game has lots to do in its current state, and I have faith that missing features will be added in the future! I am very much in love with this game right now.

Yes.

Aside from already being delayed, the world has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic known to common folk as coronavirus. This has severely impacted business all over the world. And given Japan's geological location, they've probably been impacted greatly.

As far of whether or not the game is lacking content. We should all keep in mind Nintendo didn't just drop the game on us and move on to better things. They will continue bringing us content over the next 12 months, if now next few years.

Holding back certain content from the game allows Nintendo to further work on and polish it before we get it, while keeping their March 20, 2020 promise they made us at E3 in 2019. The Nintendo Switch, unlike any of Nintendo's past consoles is on a more modernized OS and hardware, which makes pushing software updates very easy to do. We've already seen examples as the game has receive 1 update and 2 patches in the last 2 weeks. We just need to be more patient and understanding, and we'll get our content as soon as it's ready.
