I still go there every day and often come out with new items. Maybe I've never had it before. Maybe I've got inspiration from it.

I dont like playing with people who I don't know so I've not done any trading outside of my friend and my other half.

Then of course there are the customisation kits and wrapping paper. So trips are required there pretty much every day.

To me its far from pointless and has held up well over the year.

Having said all of that, I would still also like an upgrade to it. If leif could join and gracie too, that would be amazing.

Hoping for an upgrade that includes fortune cookies, PC has some really good ones that I want to return here. Also they could add a specific section for the ceiling items that were supposed to be added.

In regards to furniture I don't often purchase anything at Nooks Cranny anymore, I think I've probably seen every item appear at least once at Nooks by now so have purchased everything I'd like and have catalogued or purchased some other variations so that now I can just order from my catalogue whenever I want something new, which isn't very regular for me so fortunately the 5 item limit doesn't get in the way. I'd really like to see an upgrade to Nooks so that more items were on sale, especially some of the missing furniture sets from the old game so that were more things I'd be interested in.

I don't think the shop is completely useless though, while I do think it needs an upgrade and new furniture choices, I do regularly visit it for some other items. I've recently purchased a couple of wallpapers from there that I didn't have yet as well as customisation kits, wrapping paper and when I'm feeling too lazy to shake or chop trees for fruit I'll buy some stacks from Nooks to gift to my villager, so in my opinion the shop needs improvement but it's still useful at times for me.

genuinely only go there everyday to buy one (1) piece of wrapping paper and an orange. (maybe customization kits, but i usually stock up on enough to last me for a while.) given that wrapping paper is optional, and i could shake down a piece of fruit, i could cut it out of my routine altogether. same goes for the able sisters at this point. only reason i don't is because i'm not 100% sure i've bought everything from either and can't be asked to trawl through my catalogue app to find out.

in short summary, arguably the only regularly useful part of the shop is the cabinet. defeats the purpose of having an entire shop, really. it's long overdue an upgrade. i know some people like to argue that having it stay this way fits the "deserted island" theme better but it's not a deserted island lmao, there are people living on it, and what if your island's theme/aesthetic is a big city or even just a regular town. the NH island isn't much bigger than the NL town and isn't any more or less populated, yet the latter had an entire main street filled with shops. come on, that's a lame argument.

I got to say I really love your threads and you bring really interesting and important insights to the table! I agree wholeheartedly. I was kind of worried when they said this game would focus on an island setting. I never liked that setting and in a way, I'm scared they'll use it to justify so many missing features that we are yet to see like the Nook's that you just brought up. I understand there's not much need for Nook's when everything is more "wild" now with the DIYs being the main focus, but I never really liked the ideas of DIYs to begin with, I enjoy going shopping much more. I had hoped to see new buildings because I absolutely love that part of the game, the city in City Folk is still my fave place in AC!

They do need to give us more upgrades, however, it would benefit from having Leif in it at the very least to make it more interesting and I also hope to see Gracie eventually. I really miss her sets. I had hoped that we would have a second upgrade by July or August but it never happened. I feel like they are stretching this upgrade way too much and they are holding back building customization too much as well. We do know that there will be an upgrade sometime because there's still leftover space in the building and it is in the code as well, but I'm so confused as to when that will be. Perhaps, they want to make sure they've finished enough items to justify an upgrade. But overall, I am really missing a lively atmosphere on the island, which it currently lacks.

I barely use the Nook shop anymore. Since I've been doing a lot of trading to get certain colors of furniture I want for my island I have no use for it. The problem is that the items are still the same and its like you don't even need a reason to go there anymore once you have every single item in your catalog. There should be a new upgrade where it adds new items that we never seen before. I get that in past updates the nook shop would always display items that are limited time which is a good idea but the problem is that the variant you have is a different color and the only to get that said variant that has a different color is to trade with someone else.

I am just going to say this New Horizons compared to past AC games in terms of upgrades has the least amount of shop upgrades. You can upgrade the shop 5 times to reach to the full potential. Even in New leaf when you got the final shop upgrade you had Leif joined in and then Gracie Grace was up in the top floor. It was by the best thing we've ever seen. Why is that the Nook Shop in New Horizons has only one upgrade? You would think by now we would get another one soon but it hasn't been the case. It really is strange how the upgrades in this game don't seem to be exciting and its like you would want the shops to keep being refreshed with something new but again it just feels stale and boring.

In past AC games the nook shop was always your go to whenever you wanted new furniture and it always was refreshing whenever new stuff was added even in the full upgraded shop there is so much stuff and you can see what they have. This one in New Horizons just doesn't do much. There needs to be more variety and a reason to keep shopping at the Nook shop. When was the last time you guys stopped by your Nook Shop? Do you still use to get items for your catalog or do you not use as much anymore?
This seems like a rant more than content for a new thread, but I'll respond. Though I agree that the items are borderline redundant when compared to the what's in the App, the majority of the stuff in the cabinet is not. I would love for them to add more seasonal items and what not, but I won't go as far as to say it is pointless.

Don’t mean to sound melodramatic but I’ve kinda grown to hate it outright, myself. It’s way too small, the little nephews run up to you to annoy you even more and, after just a few months, they pretty much ran out of new stuff to sell to me.

If they were selling color variants, that’d be something else but, as we know, that’s not something Nintendo was interested in, apparently. *Really* hope we get an upgrade to it sometime soon.

Also wanted to add to this, that the shop could get multiple upgrades, but unless new items came at the same time as the upgrades, they won't solve the problem of having no reason to go there.

And even if new items get added, at some point you'll own all of them too and then you're back at square one.

So I'm not sure if upgrades to the shop would actually solve the problem, or just give you a few more weeks of content while you traded with other players to complete your expanded catalogue.

It would need a gameplay loop outside of purchasing items, but then it wouldn't really be a shop.

Not sure what the best solution to your particular problem is.

(Still would like an upgrade though)

After about a year, I stopped buying much from the Nooklings in New Leaf, as well. It wasn't as though they had new things appearing all the time, either. Same with Ables. Once you get the catalog, they exist mostly for selling items and quick restock. That's been true with all the games, so why people continue to dump on this one, I don't know.

Honestly though, in past games I always find myself in the exact position. A completed catalog means I have no use for the Nook shop anymore. With previous game I still went in to sell stuff and use the catalog machine. At least in NH, both functions can be done without ever entering the building. You’ve got the box outside and the catalog app on you Nookphone.

Whether it gets a upgrade or not, we’ll be right back to this same point after obtaining any new items such an update might have brought.

I still do visit daily to get wrapping paper for villager presents. I am lazy and also go in regularly to buy tools. Although I haven’t completed my catalogue I am at the stage that I have everything I want so I don’t need any furniture with the exception of seasonal items.I would love an upgrade and hopefully new furniture sets just for something fresh.

I always seem to get the same color schemes. I'm really hoping in future updates that we get more things to chose from, or a larger shop. I love DIY but I love shopping in the game, too.

I hope it upgrades with a patch soon.
I really only check it close to updates/holidays in case a diy bundle or item is put in it.

I really wish they had at least 2-3 color variants then just 1. Also I wish they would stop putting seasonal furniture before the event. That was disappointing. I only go there for wrapping paper and to check turnip price now

Everything will start to lose its luster after playing for quite a time, it's natural. All shops would eventually run out of items to get in any game.

But to give other perspective:

* Nook's Cranny on NH has, on its second upgrade, more items overall than the second to last upgraded shop on NL, if Nookipedia is right. (Maybe even more stock than the last? I don't know how much stock Gracie offers daily) Of course, if you wanted a "false" sense of progression thanks to the stock offered being much less, then yes, Nintendo should have split the stock severely and we could have had like 20 store upgrades.

* The point above is not counting how Nook Shopping exists and also has its own stock, including music like previous games.

* This game divided its total furniture on 2 different sides: crafting furniture and "mass-produced" market furniture. There are around 500 orderable furniture items, so there's inherently less options to buy and therefore, you'll run out of new stock faster.

* With all that in mind, you can't have an upgrade if there is not a significant amount of new things to be added. Or at least that's why I think, many people would be apparently pleased with just having 1 new item and calling that an "upgrade".

* Coming from the last point, the shop has already quietly upgraded its stock without an "upgrade". After the Fireworks season, the Cranny added to its daily rotation the handheld items from that event permanently (or at least the other 11 months). Previous games would have made a massive remodel just for 1 item, this game does not.

* Oh but you wanted a new look for the store? Well congrats, the store changes its look with the seasons and some events. Are they big remodels? No, but its still a change.

* YMMV, but the Cranny has items that are useful all time, like the wrapping paper and the customisation kits.

All in all, NH offered much more options since the beginning. More options offered from a smaller orderable catalog results in the stock available ending faster. I still remember people being disappointed when the second upgrade hit and there was only a new single piece of furniture added- could you imagine if the devs did the store upgrades like the previous game? There'd also be murder.

I mean I can't complain after literally cataloging every nook's furniture+variant from someone else

so I mainly just pop in for customization kits, the occasional tool (when I forget to fix it before it breaks), and sometimes wrapping paper (mainly just for birthdays)

plus when they add new seasonal event stuffs, like with festivale and halloween, but that's about all I can think of

oh, and selling, I guess

I still use it occasionally. Not really for furniture, but for tools , saplings, oranges and customization kits.
I don’t like crafting so whenever my tools break, nook is the place the go. You don’t underhand how much I hate that we can’t buy a stone ax at Nooks.
So I have to buy like 100 flimsy axes when I’m forced to craft.

As others have stated, I feel like this is an issue you'll encounter no matter what once you reach a complete catalog. And even if they do an upgrade, it'll just be the same thing after a couple of weeks. I can understand wanting new furniture, but if people really expect Nintendo to constantly drop new furniture simply because they're completing their catalog quickly, well then it's not going to happen and you're going to find yourself disappointed.
