Sorry if a thread like this has been made before! Personally, I?m still deciding between a digital version or physical copy ? what do you guys prefer, assuming there?s no pre-order bonus?

Generally always physical copies, but I may have changed my mind and go for the digital one after all.
Without good bonuses available to me, the benefit of not having to go to the store on March 20 is significant enough to make it worth it. I won’t be starting my game at 9PM the day before like some, but I will probably get up early on Friday to have a few solid hours before class. That’ll give me time to pick an Island I like and be ready to play proper when I get out of school at noon :3

Physical copy since you could get it earlier and play it. Also I like having a physical copy to look at, the Cover art is really pretty.
But from a practical standpoint a digital version is better, because you don't have to swap games if you want to play.

Why would you get the physical version earlier? It’s the opposite from what I understand.

I always go physical due to preference.

Digital has the benefit of pre-loading, and often 'early' access to the game (generally only a few hours early), but has some huge risks tied to it many don't realize.

1. If Switch eShop servers go down in the future, you won't be able to redownload your game.
2. Loss of access to your Nintendo Account (hacks, etc) means you lose your game.
3. You don't have a cartridge case to put on a shelf. :y

There's really no difference these days, digital copies rarely malfunction and neither do physical copies if you take care of them. With the physical copy you'll always own it until you break it, with the digital copy you'll always own it until you change your account or Nintendo bans you. Breaking it is more likely, but many people (including myself) just want to own it and have it on display.

People who are against physical would probably say that you save storage by going digital, but I feel like if you travel with your Switch you'll likely have enough storage for physical games as well. My bag came with a holder for 12 cartridges and I think most do. All of this is really up to personal preference.

Retailers sending out games too early is really not that uncommon, every time there's a new big release a bunch of people will post a day early how their copy already arrived.

I only buy physical.

I want something I can see, touch, and protect.

When I pre-ordered New Leaf I got to pick it up a couple of days before the release. Same thing happened with other games I pre-rdered. But I guess this would be a possible pre-order bonus then?

I prefer physical copies of games. The only reason I go digital is if the game is only available digital, or the digital copy is actually significantly cheaper than the physical.

I'm leaning towards digital now. I was thinking physical at first, but the convenience of just having the game on my Switch at all times is too great a pull.

i have class and work on the 20th and being able to play earlier doesn't really matter to me, so i'm getting a physical copy!! i like physical games in general because you have something to display!

I'm generally more of a physical games person... but I'll be honest and say that the hype for this game is so big I ended up preordering digitally because I really, REALLY want to play this game as soon as possible.

Somewhere down the line I'll buy the physical version just to have it (I don't like the idea of having all the previous games in physical format and NH is digital)

I was struggling with this question myself but I think I've decided on getting a physical. I'm paranoid about the data on the digital corrupting or something as that happened to one of my New Leaf copies ages ago. I have a 9am class on the morning of the 20th March but after that im gonna go straight to the mall and hope theres a copy still there, I have 4 other shops lined up to go to in case im having really bad luck with finding a copy

Me too! And I don?t want to go to the store, plus digital is about 12 hours earlier for me.

I got the digital copy because I want to play it right at midnight and not have to go out to the store. I usually prefer physical though.

I went with physical. I just like having physical games, for a number of reasons. Also, I?m in the EST time zone, so the game would be available to play digitally at midnight for me. I think I?d just be frustrated starting the game at that time, and then having to go to sleep shortly after, so there?s no real benefit in the digital version releasing earlier than I?ll be able to pick it up at the store.

oooo yes I have thought about this. As a fan of physical copy games, I have realized after some time alot of games get DLC later. The reason why I like physical copies so much is
1. if the system breaks after it is no longer supported I can buy a new old system and still play the game.
2. if I happen to not like it as much as I thought I would or don't see myself ever wanting to play it ever again, I can resell it at a low price and get some of my money back and put it into another game.
However, for animal crossing, I don't ever plan on restarting that game, if something breaks in the future when the switch is no longer supported I am not going to want to start over again and plus maybe there would be a new animal crossing game on a new system on its way. Animal Crossing I assume like alot of other games are going to have DLC and I do have more than enough the memory card space for a digital copy.
So, I have decided, it is a digital copy for me.

I ended up getting both - i preordered on Amazon but got impulsive one night and downloaded as well. Thinking of saving up to get a switch lite so that I can use both copies :p

i think i'm leaning towards digital, i'm at work on release day and the post in my area has a tendency to go back to the depot for collection next day if nobody is home to collect it.

at least with digital i know i'll for sure be able to play that night! (maybe even early hours of the morning if i can keep my eyes open that long)
