I really hope they expand on the whole diving thing because I think it would make it a lot funner.

One thing that I think would be cool is giving more dive time to experienced divers. So instead of when you're chasing that jerk of a crab you come up for air several times you can stay under longer. Either to get extra time by catching X amount of things or spending X amount of time diving, or even buying a special gear to stay under longer like the scuba mask or something, that would be so neat.

Another things that would be cool is like a Deep Dive/Shallows divider. I know there are already creatures that stick closer in or further out but I mean like once you become a better diver to be able to go past the barrier and dive further out would be neat.

Do you think they'll improve the diving mechanics in the new game? Is there anything you'd do to improve it?

I reckon they will, I think anything they introduced into New Leaf will be improved for the Switch one like the placement of PWPs. That was pretty flunky in NL but they probably opted for the HHD version of placing things for the Switch one.

Also, if bug-catching, fishing and even digging things has 3-tiers of tools then hopefully diving will introduce something to make it easier for experienced divers, like a gold wetsuit? Who knows lol

I think a gold wetsuit is the best way to implement the changes you wish for. I think they need to add more creatures that aren't available only in the island in order for the mechanic to feel more fleshed out, it's too easy to complete which is my big issue.

I'm not sure the usual silver/gold upgrades will work in this case, simply because wetsuits have so many different cosmetic varieties already. Expanding upon the shallows/depths idea mentioned above, what if after you catch a certain number of "shallows" creatures, some NPC gives you a snorkel/scuba tank you can wear to reach deeper waters. It makes the most sense to me, since generally it's breathing gear that lets you, y'know, breathe for longer.

I like the idea of silver/gold wetsuits that make it easier to catch things - possibly you dive faster and/or the creatures are less likely to swim away. I do agree that the mechanic really needs to be improved. Scuba tank/deep dive addons are a nice idea as well.

I am curious of the reason as to why the swimming was a mash instead of just a hold down, to have more control I suppose? I may understand that, but it gets tiring quite fast! I am hoping for anything that does not require consistent mashing.

For me there were only 2 reasons for diving.

  1. To complete the museum
  2. For getting the gold badge

I really don't like diving! :( It's more button bashing then fun.

I hope they will improve it really good! Also I do like the idea of silver and gold wetsuit, or items as snorkels which make it easier diving. I also want to see more things to dive for. It's no fun swimming and swimming (read button bashing), finding nothing.

Great suggestions! Personally I would like a way to swim without having to aggressively button-mash, as it can get really tiring. I agree that silver/gold wetsuits would be awesome too!

I would like to see it possible to find items like treasure out in the ocean. That would be cool! And of course more sea life. I think it would be really cool if they had a feature where you could go underwater and see everything like scuba diving, but that might be hoping too much lol I’ve just always wondered what it looks like under the water in animal crossing.

Swimming and diving needs both a improvement for sure. I would like them both more if it
wouldn't be so painful sometimes to smash the whole time the button to swim or if I could
dive a little bit longer. I guess a item that helps you to dive longer, like a diving helmet maybe,
would be great. And swimming faster of course too, maybe by holding the button and not smashing
on it the whole time.

The idea of Deep Dive/Shallows divider sounds also interesting.
