Do islanders not ping?

They do, I've been pinged like 3 times today haha.

I had the same question but on day two I had a few pings! So yes, they do! There’s a message above them and they come jogging to you!

yes, i can confirm that they do.
when you walk past them they have a dialogue box displayed above them that says "hey/yo, [player name]!" and they will run very fast to you. it happened to me today twice because my two villagers wanted to give me materials to help craft the nook store.

They definitely do, I've been pinged a few times. Even learned reactions.

I’ve not been pinged yet but it’s only been two days so I’m not too worried about it!

Mine pinged first time yesterday. And today 2 times. I think they will do it more often after they get to know you? It's just speculation, but that would be cute. :')

So far I've gotten pinged once a day. It was either for helping me with my 'quests' (like with the Nooklings store) or learning the first few emotions.
Today was the only ping which seemed a little more random. Roald gave me a manhole cover, he said he and Plucky discussed it together and they thought it was perfect for our island...
But yeah. Only getting one a day is a little bare imo.
