I've had it dyed at a hair place once, will never do that again. They messed it up TWICE!

After that debacle I did it myself once and it came out ten times better than what the hair place did. It was my first time dyeing hair too, like I don't think an amateur should get the results with less time, less money and on their first time but I did it.🙃

Basically what happened is that I went in and showed a pic of what I wanted, a purple so dark that is almost looks black in certain lighting. I wanted somethin subtle, not so bam in your face. My hair is already dark, brown, and thin, never been dyed before.

The lady bleached it pale bleached blonde which I still think was so unnecessary then coloured it medium bright purple. I went back the day after, then the managed put red toner over it and it came out a sangria colour. That was ten steps back and to the left from what I wanted!! Now it's not even purple anymore it's red!!!

I'm still mad that the lady SAID I was gonna get a darkish plum berry, and gave me bold medium purple. I even told her to go darker. She clearly did not. I'm still mad that the manager's first response was 'oh lighting editing this that' like I'm TELLING you what I want. Then the manager messed it up even worse.

So a month later I did it myself which came out soooo good but unfortunately the lady over processed my hair cause even with colour preserving shampoo, using cold water, washing my hair 2-3 times a week and not using dandruff shampoo, the colour faded back to my bleached green/orange in a month. Now my hair won't hold any colour and I have to wait another 5+ months to grow out all the bleached hair and for my natrual hair to come back in. Once that does I might just put colour over it, no bleach, I'm not ever gonna bleach my hair again. And I will never trust a 'professional' to colour my hair again.
Yikes that sounds awful! From the sound of it, dyeing over your naturally dark hair seems like it should achieve the color you want just fine! One I’ve used when I’ve dyed my own hair at home is Arctic Fox, and it’s made with a base that is essentially a deep conditioner and always left my hair feeling super soft after dyeing it, never damaged! I have more of a dark blonde shade naturally, so for me it came out true purple even without bleach, but pictures of it on dark hair seem to do more of that subtle purple in certain lighting thing. They also have a black dye and you could probably mix a little of that in if it isn’t quite dark enough for you.
