Do starting villagers move into shabby houses when they go to another island?

Title. Do they keep their starting homes when they move to another island?

I don't believe they do. I had someone have me hold onto a villager of theirs so they could move back with their intended home just for that purpose.

No, they get their regular homes. It’s great if you dislike the starter homes, but it sucks when the villager’s regular house is awful.

I can confirm that they don’t. If you have a starting villager that you want the proper interior for you can totally have them move to a friend’s island and then back in to yours. I’ve done that with two of my villagers. I’ve also picked up a villager from someone who had her as a starter with a dirt floor home and she changed to her proper interior upon moving in to my island.
