A little feature in New Horizons not a lot of people know about is the personality sub-type mechanic on villagers: Every single personality in the game has access to two different sub-types which change their high friendship dialogue with the player, and for half of the personalities their “social level”, or their wave and reactions.
Considering how one of the biggest criticisms New Horizons often gets is the “repetitiveness” of the villager dialogue, I’m curious how many people here knowingly plan their islanders around these personality sub-types, or at least considers them when picking villagers. Have you ever noticed differences between villagers with different “sub-types”? Do you have any specific preferences in them? If you knew about them, do you even care about them when choosing people?

I do somewhat consider them when choosing repetitive personality types to become permanent residents on my island, but overall I'll choose which villagers that have designs that are more appealing to me. For example, I lucked out with Sherb and Sasha differing in sub-types, but unfortunately I have Audie and Shino that share the same sub-type. I have not, however, had differing sub-types on my island that have had their friendship maxed out before, so I haven't really noticed a difference in dialogue yet! Hopefully I will notice a difference when I've become better friends with Sasha. ^^

I tried doing that when I found out about it but it limited my villager pool even more and made creating villagers lineups less fun so I stopped. That's on Nintendo though, like 90% of all villagers are of one sub-type and then there's maybe like ten that have the other one. With the uchis it's by far the worst and they're already annoying for me to pick because I only really like three designs.

OP didn't link one but maybe it'll be helpful, here's a list of which subtype each villager belongs to. The layout on the upper half of the doc's kind of a mess on mobile but you really only need the list further down. EDIT: the doc doesn't include the new villagers my bad, theirs can be found on Nookipedia

Yes I mainly try to avoid jock villagers as they just get on my nerves, apart from that though I'm happy with normal, sisterly, peppy, cranky or snooty villagers.

I do, actually. Though I never have a permanent “dreamie” lineup. But if I’m on the fence about bringing a villager to my island while island hopping for someone new, I’ll look up the subtype. For over a year I’ve had Boots and Antonio, both jocks, and it’s been mostly fine because of their different subtypes. I’ve been really surprised to note that I DO feel like their personalities are distinct, and they don’t usually repeat each other, especially during holidays and events when that can kind of kill the mood. I had Bubbles and Bangle for a while too, but they had the same subtype and really felt like clones of each other. I eventually let Bangle move because it was kind of jarring.

I had Sally for 8-9 months (should have maxed friendship) and I can’t say I noticed much difference from Fauna and Molly. Honestly that’s part of the reason I replaced her with Blaire. But maybe the subtypes are more distinct for other personalities. I’ll get Maple eventually so will try again then.

I said yes but the answer is more ‘kinda’. For my duplicate personality types I prefer if they aren’t total clones (hobby, subtype, etc) so I can see some variation in them even if it’s not a lot.

I'll also reply with a yes but sort of. Since I learned about the personality subtypes I have been trying to experience all of the different subtypes with the villagers on my island, so I made a list of candidates who I keep an eye out for whenever it's time to island hop and swap someone out. I am hoping through this process to figure out the best personalities for my island.

I try to feel them out before I invite them. I had Bangle and Apple at the same time and they had the same dialog. Now I have Bianca instead of Apple and she has different dialog which is nice. I don’t typically worry about subtypes unless I’m doubling up personalities. Uchi is actually my least favorite since they usually come of kind of rude(I’m calling you out diva) but phoebe is nice and I like her. Her dialog is different from Divas so maybe that has to do with subtypes

Sisterlies are the worst, you’re right. There’s only 5 type B sisterlies, and it used to be Paula was the only one who wasn’t pastel colored or cartoony, but now Faith is there too. Another problem is with specific species, since NH has a few species where they’re predominantly one personality in a gender, but almost all of them are the same sub-type except for one:
•All the cranky wolves are all the same sub-type, EXCEPT Dobie.
•All the snooty cats are all the same sub-type, EXCEPT Monique.

Nope. I haven't cared about the personality sub-types when picking my villagers, only the main personality type and species.
