Basically all I'm going to say is this, Britain destroyed Ireland, they took away the prominence of our language, our culture and much much more (tortured us, striped us of our land etc). It was extremely cruel what they did when I think about it and it really bothers me, so yeah I think the British Empire was evil, not so much now. Britain is a pretty nice place and I have many British friends. c:
^ This is for me personally.

I have much more things to say about what they did to other countries but I can't put them into words without looking like a scary biscuit.

This thread's intent is not to demonize the British people or Britain today, its to discuss each others view on Britain's past, just clarifying.

I mean they invaded like 9/10 countries so yeah lmaoo

Most surely the past of the British Empire was full of greed, corruptness, and horror.

I love how you clarified this! c:

There is a significant difference on how Britain was and how Britain is. :)

As a young person who went through the American public school system, I was taught that Britain was evil and that it was Americas duty to rebel against their monarchy.. I do think that America made a good decision to become their own country lol
I mean, I don't agree with everything that they do.. but they don't seem to be horrible now

Yes, but not really any different from other empires of the age. Engaging in oppression and colonization was standard fare for the time.

this thread is just to remind people of the laughable hypocrisy of serious brexit voters, isn't it?

also, I mean sure. but not much moreso than other major civilizations of history either

i was basically taught "the english are evil they killed natives invaded stuff english evil aaaaa"

although thats probably because i live in a very heavy yes neighbourhood

(is this one of those ****ty "do you think X is Y" threads?)

As a British person, yes. We aren't taught too much about it, it takes an ignorant American to tell you to read into it yourself. But in all honesty, barely any are under rule of Queen Victoria II and she doesn't have political power. There's the Commonwealth but the countries who choose to be in it aren't "controlled" by Britain to the extent of my knowledge. To hold Britain to that now would be childish. It certainly doesn't reflect modern day Britain or taint anyone's views of us today. We aren't land-hoarding pigs like we were,at least most of us aren't. Most other empires at the time fought hard to invade countries too, you can't rule every other empire out.

also whats with "the english" lmao its "the british", english is a language.. Britain is an empire ( ͡? ͜ʖ ͡?)

I think you meant Queen Elizabeth II not Queen Victoria II. XD

Nah. I have a respect for it. It's a touchy subject. I guess some people within it were evil, but it's kinda like the whole Manifest Destiny for us Americans. Which some people think was evil. I might sound deluded, and maybe i am .

BUT

I honestly would not like to consider what the world, or my own life for that matter, would be like without British invasion in the Americas.
It's hard to hate something of which I have gratitude for
