Do you think we should be politically correct? Honestly, I don't think we should, its censorship and it's only around because everything is offensive to someone. If you get offended when someone is not politically correct you need to get over it.

What do you think?

Also please be civil.

Everyone can say pretty much anything they want and that's fine, I'm not for telling people what they can and can't say, I don't agree with such censorship but you'd just think that morality would play a part in what people feel comfortable saying. I'm personally quite politically correct because I don't find slurs and things part of my daily vocabulary, I just don't feel comfortable using slurs/words people would find offensive (other than cursing), I don't feel the need for such words really.

I do think that some people take the whole "political correctness" way too far, practically telling people that everything they say is offensive but others also go out of their way to be as offensive as possible, both of which seem so pointless to me. It's pretty simple , say what you want but also think about what you say, there's no need to unnecessarily upset people (in the case of using words that are clear strong slurs and will definitely upset people, and this is just me personally, others can say and do whatever the **** they like).

Nope, people need to learn that the world is never going to be "politically correct".
Also, everyone has a reason to get offended somehow. If your choosing to get offended over things that have no malicious intent, then that's pointless and someday they are going to learn that it has no point.

in some ways, being politically correct is really just being civil, isn't it?

in other ways, being politically correct is simply good PR for smart politicians and businesses.

but certainly nobody should be censored, or punished for not being politically correct. i think the area where this is most subject to abuse and histrionics is in academia, it seems to me...

I don't think we should. One person's rights is more important than someone else's feelings. Freedom of expression is more important than emotional needs in society. And just because 1% of the whole population doesn't agree doesn't mean the other 99% shouldn't have it.

Political correctness isn't just censorship. It also means adding diversity, making sure you don't imitate other cultures, letting people have their safe spaces, and anything else like that.

In most first world countries, you can't go to prison just for saying something unless you threaten to kill someone or something crazy like that. So for the most part, people have the right to say whatever they want to. However, the same freedom of speech which gives you the right to say controversial things also gives others the right to call you out for being offensive. Freedom of speech doesn't mean you get to be immune from backlash for your own words. If you say something and it ends up damaging your credibility and career, that's your fault for saying it. However, some people are excessively offended by fairly benign language, but if you said something that most rational people do not find offensive, you'll get more support than backlash from others, so it's nothing to worry about.

Being politically correct isn't censoring anyone, it's literally just respecting people

I mean yeah some people will purposely try to find something to nitpick when there isn't anything but people don't choose to be offended over things

is there any dumb pc thing other than holidays ****?

like I've never understood people getting offended at if someone gives them an x holiday positive message, since its not demanding you to celebrate or anything. so just take as what it's meant to be at face value regardless of personal celebratory status

I always thought that was stupid. If you don't celebrate a certain holiday and some says merry Xmas or happy Hannukah or something, just smile and say thanks. THey don't know you or your life story and what you believe in, they just want to be nice

Yes they do, if they choose to make a big deal over it and complain.

People don't choose to be offended, but they (some) do choose to ***** and complain about it

Everything is probably offensive to someone, sure, I mean if you go by the definition that it causes someone to feel deeply hurt or upset, I'm offended by the word "tummy", by the fact that I have to work so hard to get my dreamies in ACNL, and the lack of sanitation in most public bathrooms, but political correctness isn't just "avoiding offending people", it's trying to de-program the systemic sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, classism, etc, from our language. Western society was largely built in favour of certain groups of people in a way that left other groups out to get treated like garbage, and political correctness, to me, is solidarity and respect for those groups pain and fight for freedom.

There's no point trying to "de-program" it. It's saying something in a manor to not offend anyone, which makes no sense because the whole English language would have have to be re-written. Respect is not calling someone a ****** or some other word like that. Nit picking your way over pointless things just so someone decides not to get petty which doesn't even matter is what being political correct is. There's a fine line between respect and political correctness.

Yeah, there's a happy medium. Like with the American election, one candidate is super politically correct and the other is an obnoxious racist and most people hate them both. All we should expect is that people just be themselves without going excessively out of their way to attack someone or sympathize with someone.

Honestly, no, not at all. There's a big difference between being politically correct and not hurting someone's feelings over something trivial to most but important to them. There's two kinds of people in this world: those who hurt others, and those who are hurt by others; and the ones who are hurt by others are usually the ones who believe in a perfect politically correct world. I mean, getting offended by every single little thing is pretty much the definition of being politically correct in the world nowadays, and it's kind of sad considering there are people with voices in certain parts of the world who wish to voice their opinions or beliefs, but those in certain restrictive politically correct countries or nations, or those who wish to be a part of them usually get unbelievably offended by things that most people in the world don't even realize or don't get offended over. But the whole topic of preventing someone from getting offended is sensitive and complicated considering we all have the right to be hurt by other's words. I guess if being politically correct meant not getting butthurt over every little thing, then maybe. But otherwise, no.

no, of course not. nobody should have to take other people's feelings into account. everybody should say what they want, even if they're going around spreading hatefully sexist/racist/homophobic/ect. bs and nobody should ever criticize said bs!

No, I don't we should have to be PC. I hate overly sensitive people who get offended easily, they really do need to get over it - real life isn't lovey dovey, peace & harmony all the time

To be honest, not many people are 'politically correct' these days; the care factor is gone. I believe it has always been this way- people have just been making it more of a problem as of late. However, that is no excuse for people to be downright rude about things that may offend someone, we all have our beliefs, and even if that one person doesn't agree doesn't mean they should 'attack' or belittle that belief.
Political correctness differs from person to person- they all have their own ideas I guess. Some people just need to be less sensitive and suck up facts sometime. As p e p p e r said,
real life isn't lovey dovey, peace & harmony all the time
though, people do need to be more respectful with some things.

NO !!! the sjws are making us, NORMAL people uncomfortable by VIOLENTLY FORCING US to respect their BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS. i just want to be able to say whatever offensive crap i want about marginalized groups, it's absolutely HORRIBLE that these awful sjws are limiting my FREEDOOM OF SPEECH just so that they will be RESPECTED and not verballt harrassed and further discriminated in society???????

/s

lmao being politically correct isnt abt "special snowflakes" - actually imo calling **** politically correct isn't good because it implies that being a decent human being to "normal" (the majority, white, men, straight, cis, abled etc) ppl isn't about being politically correct, but being okay to marginalized and oppressed groups is?? and it is debateable if you should actually respect these people? lmao ****ing shoot me right now i'm tired of dealing w/ this crap
