Do you want AC Switch to be a NEW or OLD game?

So we're less than two months away from E3, where there will probably be a word or two said about AC Switch, which will supposedly be the greatest installment of AC ever, right? There are so many new ideas that everyone comes up with that are SO fun to think about and I'm totally looking forward to playing the game as much as anyone else is...BUT, here's a little issue that's been developing:

I've been seeing complaints EVERYWHERE that people don't want a lot of new features added to the world of AC because they believe it "won't be AC" anymore. I can understand it of course, but really?! I see EVERY new AC idea shot down because it's too different from the original game, it's ridiculous. If you want an AC game that's like the original, PLAY THE ORIGINAL. I mean, I would be upset too if Nintendo decided to put swords, guns, and monsters into an AC game (which would never happen obviously) but I see people rejecting even the idea of adding seemingly normal progressions like new fruit or modern buildings!

I think a lot of people who do this are older players like myself who've been playing AC since it was on the N64 or Gamecube when we were kids, so we tend to fear too much change. But for a long time I've been seeing these new AC players (who may have started only on New Leaf) share some of their ideas for AC Switch that have never been in an AC game before and ultimately get bombarded with negativity because they're ideas are "not AC". I personally like thinking of new ideas and how they can be incorporated in such a way that would fit into the AC world, and I wish others would take the time to think without outright rejecting someone's idea solely because it's foreign to any other AC game.

In the end, it all comes down to this: How is Nintendo suppose to create a brand new mainline game with only a few small improvements like graphics, or addition of features from OLDER games??? Yeah it'd be nice, but if that was the case then why not even give a subtitle, let alone any pictures or footage if it's just going to be "New Leaf 2"?? All I'm saying is that Nintendo wants to surprise us with something totally refreshing and new, something that NEW players will be interested in and at the same time entice older players to continue playing. Nintendo always surprises us with things we haven't even thought of, so maybe we're all wrong, but in the end there will be new features no doubt and because Nintendo cherishes this game as one of their greatest franchises, they're not going to destroy the integrity of the original AC game. They're going to improve it, and make it even greater so it will last for years to come. Just like all of the previous installments have.

Feel free to share your opinion and maybe some of your own unique ideas, I'd like to read them~

that's an interesting topic for any game tbh. There's always people at both sides, and i find both opinions understandable to an extent.

Personally, i'm a new player and i fell in love with new leaf. I can see why someone that has been playing for a longer time wouldn't want this familiar experience that they enjoy so much with AC to be taken away from them. And i can see why, as a newer player, i got so many ideas in my head about what direction i want the new game to take. In the end, to put it simply, i sit somewhere in the middle. i want the next game to feel like an AC game with all the familiar things from the older games (i've played WW and NL), i don't want that to change and be a completely different game. But i also want them to add new things, new features, and actually make it feel like a new game. I know it sounds like i'm contradicting myself, but in the end what i'm trying to say is that i feel like progress and improvement are good things within any franchise, as long as it doesn't take away the reasons why people have enjoyed this franchise in the first place. As long as it doesn't ruin the familiar AC experience, and it only adds to it

I'm honestly kind of tired of releases of old games. I would love a new game with features from the old one. But I feel like people in the community who don't want a new Animal Crossing are whiners. New can be good. New is why Blathers doesn't go on and on and on at the museum anymore.

New.

But that doesn't mean most 'novel' ideas being shot down should not be. 95 to 99 % of the ideas suggested are stupid and do not merit consideration.

I have only played Wild World, New Leaf, and Happy Home Designer but I would really like the ability to customize your skin tone when you start the game. Sure, I would like new ideas depending on how relevant it is to the actual game (example: THANOS took over your town! You and three other friends MUST defeat him by taking villagers and launching them into his face. (not really relevant to AC)).
More relevant: the ability to customize your skin tone (without having to go to the island, maybe like HHD).
These are some ideas that I saw online (subtract Thanos).

Definitely a new game. Rereleasing an old Animal Crossing game wouldn't make any sense.

Definitely new, I think it'd be kind of disappointing to hear almost nothing about it and then it's just revealed to be a remake of one of the older games. I also don't think it'd make much sense to remake an older game since up until this point the 'plot' of the Animal Crossing games was to basically just be a neighbor to animals and do stuff for them, and seeing as how Nintendo normally goes above and beyond for their remakes, they'd basically just be making a whole new game to begin with.
Seeing old features return would be cool though! But just giving us an old game would be kind of disappointing.

A new game with a feel of the old is what I'm hoping from it. I want everything I love about it, but I want there to be something that still makes it feel new. City Folk merely felt like an expansion of Wild World and suffered from it, so I'm hoping AC Switch doesn't feel like an expansion of New Leaf.

I'd love a new and refreshing take on AC! But I'd also love some old features added back from the older games, since I never got to experience them. For new stuff, I kinda want some very light magical/fantasy elements added. This is not a very popular idea, but I think it would be really cool to have magical furniture or PWPs. It doesnt have to be forced on a player but the option will be there. Hehe

I wanna new AC. If it’s just a port of New Leaf or something, I’m gonna be upset.

New. Animal Crossing hasn't really changed much at all since the very first game and that makes me sad because there's so much potential to this series.

The transition from Wild World to City Folk comes to mind when this argument comes up. While City Folk was great, it mostly felt like an upgraded Wild World. It had mostly the same visuals and soundtrack, but in higher quality. Some features and events from the Gamecube version made a return, and there were some new items and characters, but it didn't feel very fresh to me when I picked it up and played it for the first time.

New Leaf, on the other hand, was a much better experience for me because of how it introduced so many interesting changes while still managing to capture most of the essence of the older games. Fruit stacking, many new types of clothes including legwear and socks, Swimming, being the Mayor and being able to personalize your town, lots of new characters/villagers, many new items, fruits, K.K. Songs, Hourly soundtrack... It seemed like there was something added to every aspect of the game, and it felt great. New Leaf has it's flaws though. Lacking dialogue, unpredictability of villager housing, PWP limitations...

I feel like Animal Crossing for the Switch has the opportunity to introduce and update a lot of features and items like New Leaf did. New hourly soundtrack, characters, and visuals, etc. All of this while addressing the flaws of the previous entries, and even reviving coveted/missed features from older games like the outside sport ball and gyroid storage. I want AC for the Switch to be new. We haven't been waiting all this time for New Leaf 2.0, have we?

New

Taking five plus years to make a game with barely anything new to it would not bode well for me.

We need a new Animal Crossing its been ages since new leaf

See? Everyone wants a NEW AC obviously, so we should be welcoming NEW ideas, not shooting them down before thinking about the affect they could have on a game. Realistically of course.
