Does anyone know if our store's furniture variations ever change?

Over the past few months I've seen people mention seeing more than one variation of a furniture item in their store. E.g. they usually get the black antique set but then one day they see a brown item. I've also seen someone say that the variation you have changes every year, can anyone who has time travelled to another year confirm this?

Lately I've been buying things in my store just in case the colours change next year and I don't know whether to keep doing that or not. I don't trade currently so I want to know if the store can eventually offer everything. Thanks for any replies

i am a time traveler, and my store tends to have different variations of the cute set, as long as stand alone times like the macramé tapestry and others i can’t think of right now, along with miscellaneous items like the slow cooker.

From my experience (without time travelling to another year), it seems you only get certain colors, but it's not limited to one and not all items match.

For example, the cute set in Nooks.... I've seen the yellow bed and I'm pretty sure the red or dark blue too, but for the sofa I've only seen dark blue and white. The table is often yellow. The vanity only in light blue. For antique furniture, same thing, different items in different colors.

It's almost impossible to get a complete matching set without trading, especially if you're going for the color not common to your island. I'm not sure about it changing yearly. My guess is you have certain colors common to your island and they expect you to use those or trade. Balloons and Redd do bring other variations, but that can be very hit or miss.

I'm pretty sure that every item that Nook sells is color-locked. You have to trade if you want a matching set (which is fun in my opinion).

I know for a fact that what Nook's Cranny sells you is color locked. For example every piece of Cute set is always dark blue for me. (I have over 1200 hours in this game)
You can however get different colors though shooting down balloons, shaking trees, presents from your villagers, in Redd's Treasure Trawler, Wisp, and of course through trading with other players.

Oh no, that's even more disappointing than just having one complete colour set :/ I really wanted to go through this game on my own without having to trade, I mean I don't even have NSO and wasn't planning on it...

It's a shame the variations don't apply to the tools you can buy in store, I get quite bored of using the same colours. I think the available tools are tied to each individual island, just like the native fruits and hybrids.

I agree with @cocoacat, and it just creates more confusion with what you have or have not catalogued. I really hope they're planning to introduce more matching furniture sets into the series.

You can actually customize the in-store tools to the colour you like! I'm happy they give us that option but yeah I really hope they don't make this furniture-locking a permanent thing, I think it's a bit unfair to those who never intended to trade and didn't expect that they'd actually have no choice. I'm pretty sure you can, I had a different colour ducky fishing rod and elephant watering can and I just used customisation kits to make them the ones I wanted.

i hate how they did this, i really hope eventually they offer more customisations than the ones we usually get bc what is the point in getting the same item in the same colour over and over? it's really frustrating

Thanks for asking this! I’ve been wondering this myself even though I’ve been playing for a few months.I have read about being color locked though I thought I’ve seen some items in my store show up different times with a different color. The ones I’ve noticed being color colored were the mug, surfboard, retro fan. Then again, I can’t say I’ve been completely observant either since there aren’t a lot of items I was looking for even before my catalogue was full.

In terms of items being locked for each day, I've only come across it changing when I TTed a couple months ahead and then back. I don't think it's happened again though, so basically my items are fixed for each day. I have to trade on Nookazon or Belltree for other items and variants.

Edit: Also wanted to mention I do get different color variants, but I usually get one variant more than the other. I'm not sure why this is.

I have been collecting other colour variations from shaking trees and hitting balloons. I also trade with friends and other players for the other colours. Also going to massive cataloguing parties where you can exchange colours of a lot of items

Oh interesting. I feel like the color lock is for sets. All my rattan and antique items have been the same color and I believe I have the full set now? Though I haven’t really tracked it given cataloguing and getting furniture from balloons. I don’t think I’ve seen different colors for the sets in my nook.

I've also only ever seen my sets in a single colour, but then again I don't think I've seen every item in the store, just most of them. It's interesting how people have had different experiences though, I wonder how Nintendo coded it.

I feel like the only way to get different variations of furniture without trading is either through redd (although the price is marked up), shaking trees or popping balloons
