Does this frustrate anyone?

If you had first dibs then I feel like you should get the villager.
End of story.

I think the villager trading is pretty neat but selling villagers is downright greedy.

It is pretty greedy. ESPECIALLY when you don't want it.
If you're going to sell a villager for a predetermined price, why? You think you earned millions of bells for getting lucky?
And I ALMOST agree with some auctions because it shows who really wants someone the most... BUT that also shows who PLAYS the most. Not everyone is able to produce tens of millions of bells in their playstyle, but that doesn't mean they want it less. Its a tough call...
When it comes to trading a villager for another.. That's hard to do, Especially if both already have ten villagers. And then one person will have to wait for their end of the deal with a possibility of losing the villager in different ways. Not everyone is honest, unfortunately, and it takes an awful amount of trust to do a villager trade for the second to receive their end.

That's life, though? In any sort of situation involving an economy, real-life or in-game, everybody will always be looking to make a profit off of something that they know other people want. And the people who want it? They'll always be looking to bid higher than everybody else, because they want it. Blame the people who love these characters enough to pay for them, just as much as you blame the people selling them. The prices wouldn't even be so ridiculous if there wasn't such a clambering need for them. It's not that people think they DESERVE millions of bells-- it's that other people told them they'll pay millions of bells, and the seller isn't going to say "no" to that.

All you have to do is look at any thread where somebody is trying to sell an unpopular villager. They just plain don't get offers. Then look at a thread for somebody like Merengue or Stitches, and whammo, bells out the belfry.

Only greed propels people to hold real life logic in place while in a video game. Especially one that's supposed to be as easy going as Animal Crossing. But people will do what others allow. It comes down to the choice of choosing who you do your dealings with. I just got Rosie, often sold in the upwards of 80 mil, for free. But I plan on keeping her. If she ever accidentally moves, I will find someone else who wants her and she will be free to them as well.

But people will do what others allow.
Not only allow, but encourage. Like I said, the prices wouldn't be so enormous if people didn't ravenously try to outbid each other. The sellers are not the only ones to blame for the villager economy. And, truth be told, I don't think they're wrong for doing what they're doing.

Like you said, Animal Crossing is a game. If this is how they choose to play it, why shouldn't they?

I think villager selling/trading makes the game a lot more serious, I understand you want your favorite characters, but believe me, waiting for them instead of buying them for a trillion gives you much more satisfaction.

I have no problem with people buying and selling villagers - if people want to do that, let them. I personally wouldn't sell my villagers though, and I'm too poor to buy most of them haha :p not that I'd want to anyway, since I'm not really focused on getting certain villagers.
