if you're unsure, you should just use "they". i feel like that's common sense. pronouns being "used this way" is not as new to society as people would like to think, it's just become more widely known. i also don't think it's fair to generalize an entire group of people based on a select few individuals who supposedly overreact or get angry. i think you'll find that the vast majority of people who are initially misgendered will simply politely correct you -- if you continue misgendering them afterwards and don't bother to correct yourself and/or apologize, that's a you problem.
 
An innocuous thread for nonbinary/trans people gives others the excuse to barge in and go into a completely unrelated discussion about pronouns, some even being very openly discriminatory? Surely I've never seen this happen on bell tree before ever
I didn't expect my thread to get derailed that fast. Why would you hop into a thread clearly not directed at you to complain about trans people
