I'm new to the whole terraforming thing, I don't remember it being a thing in New Leaf, but then again I didn't play New Leaf for too long. I was just curious, do you think we will be able to only terraform the land within the boarders of the island we choose, or do you think we will be able to change the boarders of the island too?

I mean, it would be really awesome to be able to change the shape of the island, to maybe a heart, or a circle, etc. It would give us even more option for customizing our island.

I doubt we'll be able to change the shape, though I do think we'll enough enough freedom to be unique. I think as long as its grass, you can change it. But sand is likely off-limits.

I don't see being able to terrform the beach, which means the island will probably remain square for everyone.

No, terraforming wasn't a thing in New Leaf, and I think it's one of a few features they added it specifically so people could just play New Horizons without having to obsess over every little detail of their island from the beginning.

I'm honestly not sure about terraforming the entire island, but even if we can terraform the beach, I'm sure there will be limits, like a minimum and maximum size for your island. On all of the maps, we've seen an "arm" of grassy terrain that goes into the ocean, so that makes me wonder. Otherwise, like Khaelis, I'd assume we can't change the beach.

Ironically I'm still likely going to fuss over every little detail of my island lol. Gonna be stuck with it for a while still, and I'm assuming Resident Services can't be relocated so I want that in a suitably workable spot.

Honestly, same, especially with the assumption about Resident Services. I will be somewhat upset if we can't move it, though. Between that, my native fruit, and the airport color, I assume it'll take me a bit. But it's still better than starting a new town in New Leaf, especially since you'll be able to see where Resident Services is pretty early on.

There will definitely be limitations on Terraforming, but I guess they will be tested fully once the game is released. There have already been some rumours of how much can be changed, as people suspect the rocks in the water to be a kind of guide for what is permanent and what is not.

i mean, ig it’s always possible with the whole terraforming feature but as others have said there’ll likely be limitations and i doubt we’ll be able to change the shape of our island

I don’t think that we’ll be able to change the entire shape of our island. I imagine the beach is not something we’re able to reshape, apart from likely adding outlets for rivers.

I wish! But I'm pretty sure we won't be able to, that seems like it'd make very very easy to break something. The beach probably serves as a sort of immovable border for your island.

As far as we've seen, we can make rivers (includes waterfall), land, and paths. We cannot make a beach.

On the other hand, I'd like to know if we can remove all rivers from the island and only have a beach.

i highly doubt we'll be able to change the shape, because there will definitely be limits on terraforming.

i saw an image a few days ago someone took from PAX East where they think these rocks indicate the limits of it, which makes sense since it is a river mouth into the ocean.

So glad I saw this. Another important thing to consider when picking a map.

Yes! I think we will be able to. What we saw gameplay wise, was a demo version which was subject to change. We were told this in countless videos (or from all the videos I saw).
The music, museum etc may not be what we see/hear in the finished product.
So I think a lot of surprises may still come our way in the shape no pun intended
of transforming our islands completely! Hehe (◍︎˃̶ᗜ˂̶◍︎)✩︎

Likely, you will not be able to change the border of the first layer or the beach and river inlets in any way. This includes the peninsula. You will likely be able to build a river going out to the last grass block available before either hitting the beach or the ocean water. I do not think we will be able to make the peninsula any bigger or smaller. River inlets will likely be fixed, and the border between the first layer of grass and the beach will also likely be fixed.
