I think after you collect a certain number, you find a "Furniture" mushroom. I just found "Forest Wall" disguised as a mushroom on the ground. I'm not sure what happens to the rest of them though, besides being good to pay off your first loan.

Yeah, the mushrooms give you the Mush series like in the Acorn Festival in Wild World.

Yes it's finding mushrooms all month long. So keep them in order to have some presents and perhaps the entire collection.
You could also sell them to nook.

Since its a month long event, I'd assume them to be pretty rare, you'd probably have to play daily and then some if you wanted a whole set.

I don't think you have to keep the other mushrooms. I just think you find the furniture and stuff randomly.
