Ever since Generation 6 Pokemon has had a gimmick to sell their games. It started with Megas in Gen 6 and now we have Terastal in Gen9.

My favourite is Terastal so far. Pokemon changing type is a very clever way to change up competitive. I think this can extend to virtually any Pokemon and make them competitively viable instead of locking them in a certain type and strategy.

i always liked z moves. collecting the crystals was fun, and so were the cool little 'dances' your character would do each time. personally never got the hype for megas.

Looking back at it. Megas are probably the worst gimmick for me. Only a select few Pokémon benefit from it and some of the Megas didn't even make sense like...why does Charizard and Mewtwo get 2 Megas?? Why does Mewtwo even get a Mega when it didn't even exist until only recently (in the PokeWorld)? Z-moves were really cool though. So much animation was put into each dance and move. Light That Burns The Sky continues to be the top move animation for me.

I guess I like mega forms from this list, but I’m not a fan of any of the options.

I guess I'd have to go with megas, although there's definitely a good number of Pokemon that should have had mega forms when they didn't, and a good number of Pokemon that shouldn't have had mega forms when they did.

I like both Mega Evolution and Z-Moves in their own ways but I'd have to say Mega Evolution is my favorite.

I wish Mega Evolution hadn't been abandoned in Game Freak's quest to come up with a new gimmick every generation. I like the Mega Evolution concept and I enjoy a number of the Mega Evolutions they made, but I wish more Pokémon got to benefit from it. For example, one of my two favorite Pokémon is Cacturne, but while it has great offenses, it has terrible survivability and is slow. Lifting some more Pokémon like that out of obscurity would have been nice, especially in ORAS since Cacturne is a Hoenn-native Pokémon. I'll also always be disappointed that we could have something like Mega Rayquaza exist, but Mega Evolution and Primal Reversion were abandoned before Regigigas could get a Primal Reversion that could make it not absolutely terrible. I love Regigigas' design and wish they could just let it not be awful for once. Mega Evolution had potential but it was just tossed aside.

Z-Moves are a pretty nice gimmick as well though. They were pretty versatile and fun to use.

On the flipside, I hate Dynamax and Gigantamax. I understand the whole stadium thing but I've always found it just intellectually lazy and goofy.

I'll have to see how Terastal feels when Scarlet and Violet release in November. The type changing aspect that some Pokémon will get is neat, but the extra bits and bobs coming out of their heads in the Terastalized forms feel unfitting and unnecessary.

Megan hands down. I’m pretty annoyed they removed it tbh because there’s so many Pokémon that could’ve benefitted from it and I think it would’ve been better the more they added.

Z moves are the worst.

Yeah, the crowns are pretty dumb looking, though I can understand why they decided to go with them. Colour-blind people may not differentiate between type changes if there isn't a clear indicator.

I'm surprised a lot of people voted for Megas!
Megas may look cool but they take a lot to code into the games. Imagine trying to hunt down hundreds of Mega Stones and not finding the one you really wanted? I was angry at the time, but I later realised it was for the better that they removed Megas. Not only that, from a lore perspective, those Pokemon can no longer have any further evolutions. So no cross-gen evos like Ursaring. Gigantamax was different because it didnt really effect the Pokemon. It was almost like an illusion created by Eternatus' energy. Well, despite my problem with Megas, I can see a lot of users liking them. A lot of old Pokemon were given a makeover to make them competitively viable so it makes sense they would be popular. People are still bitter about no Mega Flygon to this day.

I liked megas but only for the new aesthetics. I don't really care for the gimmicks since it's limited who gets them (speaking more specifically about lack of custom gimmick for that specific Pokemon).

Like sheesh please give me a mega ekans :(

I wish they would have just stuck with Megas. Z moves are ok and it gave us that animation of pikachu getting yeeted into space, but Megas was such a great way to make weaker Pokemon more viable for battles.
Gen 8 and 9 gimmicks just aren't as good design wise as mega mons were (though, some of those unique dynamax designs could have been used as Mega Pokemon designs) and gen 8's was more unbalanced than some OP Megas from the looks of it.

I thought megas were really cool and made for some unique forms/temporary evolutions. Gave some less desired Pokemon a chance to shine. I wish they would have kept those instead of the new gimmicks. Wasn’t really a fan of the other ones.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense, they definitely couldve been designed a lot better, or been floating above their heads or something. The fire chandelier one looks absolutely ridiculous

Arguably coding in a few mega stones in USUM would've been less than the whole animations for EVERY type + special moves for certain pokemon for z moves. They could've continued giving fully evolved pokemon mega evolutions whilst giving those that needed evolutions new evos, and then megas later on.

Mega evolutions.

I think the concept was good, giving some lesser used and underpowered Pokemon a time to shine again with a temporary 4th evolution. Given my team will always (when possible) consist of Pigeot, Mawile, Gardevoir, Lopunny and Houndoom, it was great that 5/6 of my crappy team could go one step further and not totally suck.

The designs were mostly stellar too. Whilst I get a bit tired of seeing older Pokemon constantly getting the focus over newer Poke's (especially Gen 1) the designs were just...*chefs kiss*...Mostly.

I think my only gripe with them were that they were temporary. I honestly wouldn't mind Pokemon being able to have a permanent 4th form. Obviously rebalance the megas with it in mind that they're no longer a temporary thing, but I would much prefer that a 4th form be given to mons who are a little underwhelming rather than a temporary overpowered form...Which likely won't be coming back. Only three forms seems like a redundant gimmick that really limits some of the Pokemon being able to stay relevant years later when the 3 forms they have aren't brilliant.

Mega Pidgeot as a permanent 4th evolution would be far better than the temporary form we'll probably never see again.

Z-moves were really cool though. So much animation was put into each dance and move. Light That Burns The Sky continues to be the top move animation for me.
My Junior year in marching band, one of my friends managed to convince the band director to "add" a move to our routine of just standing there (I was in pit, so it was a pit only thing) - that move? The dark type Z-move dance. It's hard to see, but there is video footage of it floating out there, somewhere.

As for me? This is a difficult question. My favorite gimmick on the list is probably Terastal Pokemon, but only because that's the latest and greatest thing. I have a bad habit of liking the latest thing a lot and forgetting about old stuff. Terastal Pokemon seem cool, and more 'mons for me to collect. (Which reminds me, I still don't have all the Gigantamax Pokemon, I should get onto that instead of sinking more time into Pokemon Legends: Arceus...)

the gen 7 games were my introduction into pokemon, so I am a little biased towards z moves, but i like seeing my character do a lil dance.

I think Mega evolutions were neat, just because they offered a proper change in form...but, I also hated that the form was temporary and would go away after battle. - Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the gimmicks in general. I'd really like Pokemon to be more about the natural ecosystem and the relation of creatures to humans again. The gimmicks really diverged from the entire point of the franchise to me...and the games in general continue to move further and further away from what I actually loved about the original concept.

I voted for Mega Evolution but with the disclaimer that I do not play competitively and purely liked them for the aesthetic and for the option of being able to use the gimmick every once in a while during the storyline of the game. Like what others said, I don’t particularly like who all got Mega forms and feel like they were wasted on some Pokémon.

From a storytelling perspective I also don’t like what they did to the canon. An alternate timeline just feels… kinda like a cop out. And it isolates the gimmick too much. I know it’s unlikely for any of the gimmicks to return, but now it feels like if they want to bring any of them back, Mega Evolution will be the more convoluted of the options. I wish they just made it like a new discovery in the Pokémon world for X/Y and then Hoenn remakes allow those games to play out the same as R/S/E but sprinkle in the gimmick. I didn’t like that the entire storyline felt too tied with them.

I’ll stop rambling now about them, and say all of that to really get to the point that I like the gimmicks more for aesthetic purposes but overall don’t really LIKE any of them lol

Z-Moves were boring to me and took too long, Dynamax felt silly and also took too long (but the animations for the attacks were really cool), and terastralizing is pretty but ALSO takes too dang long. I like the way it can shift a battle tho, but I wish it had a larger effect during battles. Overall it never really made a huge impact in my play through :/

Z-Moves are probably my favorite of the gimmicks, mostly because of all the fun and interesting things they let you do with status moves. For example, I have a Drapion that I like to use in the Battle Tree that uses a combination of Z-Acupressure with its Sniper ability for lots of critical hit fun.

I've become more fond of Mega Evolution over the years, especially the ones that improve on a Pokemon's design (Mega Absol is my favorite). I agree that certain more neglected Pokemon could have used them over ones that were already considered powerful and popular, though.

Also from a purely aesthetic stand, I voted Megas. I thought it was really neat seeing extra evolutions for Pokemon, and majority of the designs were really cool. Mega Mawile has a soft spot in my heart; it's one of my favorite Pokemon and its mega is absolutely amazing.

I'm coming from a very biased stand though as I wasn't a fan of the later generations in general. Gen 6 was when I started distancing from Pokemon, and I only properly came back in Gen 9. Because of that I barely remember the Z-moves and completely missed the dynamax era. I don't feel like I missed too much, though.
