@OwensUsername That's concerning, this happened with someone I tried to let visit yesterday, too. I hope nothing is wrong with my 3DS or my game. I've had hundreds of people visit my town over the years, so this is a new problem. I don't know how to find out what's wrong or to fix it if something is wrong. Maybe it's on Nintendo's end. If it is, I hope they fix it soon. Please post again later, and we can try again.

I can't invite anyone new to my town or visit theirs, only best friends I made before last few days, and possibly I could visit @kiwikenobi but I don't know if I ever added as best friend so not sure about that.

So the whole not allowing newly made friends to visit your town seems to still be in effect.
It's possible it gets fixed, so I don't want anyone to panic.
But, at least for my limited friend group in game, there's a growing concern that this is the unfortunate beginning to online features being taken down earlier than expected.
There are issues elsewhere. The islands are crashing a LOT, every player I ask says it's excessive even by usual standards. One friends BF chat keeps turning off.

IF this is permanent, I'm disappointed we didn't learn of it ahead of time. I know I'm not alone in saying that if I knew we couldn't invite friends after a certain point, I would have immediately added anyone to my list who wanted help.
I still want to help what friends I can before anything else shuts down, so I've been leaving out items for friends to catalog, fruit, etc.
I remembered that you (Kiwikenobi) had many orderable items I didn't pick up, but I realize my friends might want ones I personally didn't. So, assuming I can still visit you, I wanted to ask the massive favor of letting me come sometime (doesn't have to be today, I'm a bit busy anyway lol) and catalog the items I don't have so they can add them if they want (obviously I will tell you which I need if I come over!)
Also would like to ask if I could come for RV visits if one of my friends happens to want an item from one you have. I haven't asked my group about any of this yet so there's no pressure to do this, I totally understand that and appreciate all you've done to help me and everyone here!
I know it's a bit excessive, but I'm just bummed out about it, so I'm trying to help the few I can before we lose more online features.
To players who didn't get to add friends yet: I am SO sorry. This is more annoying than requiring thousands of weeds for a gold badge.
(Which is really saying something.)

Well, previous Animal Crossing games (City Folk, Wild World) have fan made online servers. A tech smart friend says there is no doubt in his mind that the same will happen for New Leaf. There is already a project called Pretendo (linked above) trying to do just that.
I know that this doesn't make it suck less, but we can at least be happy that the Animal Crossing community is still here even if our in game friendships are forced to end, and I'm so grateful for all of you.

And I REALLY hope it gets fixed! I should say that if it starts working again, please take care of the other users ASAP, they need it more than me and who knows how long it will stay fixed.
The Prentendo article suggests spamming Nintendo with questions about it might make them shut it down early or whatever, but personally I don't think there's harm in asking respectfully like you suggest, and I'm curious about it too.

@leafturnedover I can't imagine them being that spiteful, to shut it down early because people are asking legitimate questions about why it stopped working in such a strange way. Spam is never good, of course, but just asking nicely one time couldn't possibly do any harm.
I have plenty of time to help everyone, so just let me know what you need, and I can help you with it any time, assuming you and I are still able to connect, I haven't had anyone I've already connected with before to test the connection with since it started behaving strangely.

I agree, I think maybe people are upset at the situation and are imagining Nintendo to be more evil than they are. (I mean, I have my share of gripes with Nintendo but I don't think we need to go that far lol.)

Was just gonna add that I can check to see if you still register as having your gates open if you like, in the case that I can't, it would save you the trouble of leaving those items out.
