I'm not going to lie; I didn't get any "inside scoop" or anything. Call it a very well-educated guess.

So if they accidentally put Sega up there early... we know what that means =p

And Sonic needs to be in SSBB (to all you Sonic haters)... Sega is a very important part of the gaming industry and its history.

Absolutely correct, that's my reasoning for including Sonic in SSBB. Smash Bros., in my eyes, is not limited to only Nintendo... but, perhaps, its main goal is to showcase the gaming world as best as possible.
