March 2025 maintenance (and other updates)

I seem to recall this being brought up before, but has TBT considered a Patreon? The Kofi link is easy to miss and it took me over a year to realize it even existed. I assume that's by design; I understand if you don't want members to feel pressured to donate or to make them worry about TBT being funded. I really respect that considerate attitude!

I have to agree, I don’t like the large ad on the top of the page. It’s very distracting and makes the website harder to use when it doesn’t load immediately.
Even with an ad blocker, the large empty gap where it's supposed to be is somewhat hard on the eyes and looks awkward. This isn't a problem on my mobile Safari browser, thankfully.

Think about it: if new users visit the site for the first time and are greeted with a humongous ad at the top, they might get annoyed right away and leave. My suggestion (if it really must stay the same size) would be to slot it in the place between the bottom-most post (below the page numbers) and the area where you compose a post. In my opinion, it would look somewhat less awkward there.

Also, how about a "Support TBT" link somewhere on the top banner (or bottom "Contact Us" spot) instead of tucking it away in a corner on the main page? Maybe that will draw donors.

Nice update TBT! Excited to maybe participate in a flower week this year?? Maybe??? Gosh we will see. I keep thinking I'm available and then I'm not.

Thanks for also mentioning ads! I've been meaning to disable my ad blocker for TBT since it's NEVER been intrusive and deserves the ad revenue!

I agree that the gap looks a bit weird. It’s still there whether or not someone uses an Adblock.

For the Kofi, I recommend putting it at the bottom of the bottom of each page with the other links (contact us, terms and rules, etc.), or even at the top of the page with the banner. That would help with visibility and could explain the lack of revenue.

I personally didn’t know about the Kofi until more recently, but I can’t speak for everyone.

That’s what I was talking about. I don’t mind ads on the site being a way to earn some money to fund any necessary repairs or updates but a large ad block at the very top of each page is an issue. I don’t want to click a bit too low for the control panel and end up on another site when I don’t want to.

when I slide left, I see this

I noticed that, when I hold down the like reaction to pull up other reacts while on mobile, it treats it as if I want to open a link. I remember this being a bit of a glitch before (where it would have this window popup, and it wouldnt let me select any reacts besides "Like"), and I'd just reboot the browser to get it to work. now it is letting me select other reacts, but it always has this window popup first now, and I have to touch off to the side to make it go away so I can select react.

edit: I think the solution is to hold down the react button for only a brief moment. I think before it was required to hold it longer, but I could be wrong. it may simply take a little adjusting on my part.

In my experience, it's always come up as a link when I hold down on it for too long. You're right in your edit, you just hold the button for a very brief amount of time and you don't get it asking if you wish to open in another tab

I was just about to mention this too, so it's good to know how to avoid this pop up! I've personally never had it do this before :v
