I only ask because...I'm starting to think circumstances have blocked me from ever achieving this.

When the game launched I played very casually, maybe once every couple days...but at the same time, I'm fairly good at Salmon Runs thanks to Splatoon 2.
So I made my way to Profreshional +3 only encountering Cohozuna once...and when that happened I had no idea what was going on so I was flat out attacking him not knowing what the gimmick was.

Now I sit at high Profreshional +3 on average...and I don't think beating him is an option at this stage. It's almost always high tide when he shows up, and my team just gets obliterated or time runs out.

Should I purposely lose ranks just so I can beat him at least once?

I've actually had more luck beating the Cohozuna at Eggsecutive VP than any other rank. I feel like at higher ranks, the people you're paired with are much more efficient at killing bosses and therefore dealing damage to the Cohozuna. I don't know if ranking down will help as lower ranked players don't really get the gist of what to do to defeat a cohozuna.

You only encounter a Cohozuna if you finish wave 3, which is tricky enough sometimes, and if you and your teammates meters are charged up. So you can sometimes tell when he's going to appear. Some weapons deal a lot of damage by shooting him alone, like the grizco weapons. Other times you have to rely on getting golden eggs to kill bosses/kill the cohozuna. Specials are always good to use to kill bosses/kill the cohozuna as well.

They're certainly not easy to kill, best of luck trying to defeat one!

I've killed him twice in the lower ranks only because I kept getting deranked in Freelance, lol. I don't know if deranking would help because a lot of the people there don't know how to kill the Cohozuna. They always panic and let more bosses spawn in. It might be more frustrating.

I've had more luck defeating him at higher ranks just because most people are likely to be familiar with the strategy. You'll also get a basic idea of how your xtra wave will go by how smoothly your last 3 waves went with that team, lol. If you struggled all three waves with your team, you're probably not going to beat Cohozuna.

There are some general tips to make this boss easier, but of course weapon sets and map/tide factor in greatly:

My best advice is to rely on the cannons for boss kills (not just your main weapon) and then try your best to use at least 1-2 golden eggs to shoot at Cohozuna and then 1 egg to kill a boss (then rinse and repeat). The cannon itself deals a great amount of damage and can 1HKO a lot of bosses, so if you're using a low damage/high DPS weapon like an aerospray, you would be better off using your cannon egg to kill a boss like a scrapper rather than shooting at it. If you have a low mobility weapon like a heavy roller and you see yourself next to a stinger, you can use one gold egg cannon to majorly damage the stinger, and then finish it off, etc. The cannon also one shots the flyfish if you hit it in the split between the baskets. This just helps with timing and deals great damage anyways so why not. Also keep your eye out on egg snatchers - sometimes they fly away with a bunch of eggs but end up carrying the eggs closer to where you can aim at Cohozuna.

If you see you are targeted by the Cohozuna, don't focus on bosses and just shoot at it while luring it to team mates or eggs (at a safe distance). If you have a weapon with heavy DPS, you might be better off shooting at the Cohozuna if you're not helping out a team mate. Eg. A Hydra Splatling will be more beneficial safely shooting Cohozuna at a distance rather than tackling smaller bosses on its own.

Always use the crab tank special on the Cohozuna almost immediately. This special is tricky to control when there's a lot of bosses and it's very damage heavy. I like to use things like the hurricane thing and booyah bomb on boss crowd control or if there's the annoying fish stick.

Good luck~!

I’ve only beaten him once so far but have come close at least a half dozen times. I know I’ll beat him more in the future. I enjoy the challenge at least and am glad he was added for Splatoon 3.

Welp...that was underwhelming LOL

The above comments were 100% accurate...I finally beat him with a well oiled team at Profreshional +3 rank. My teammates were using specials to take out multiple bosses at once (like I try to do) and the crab tank was used properly and fired directly at Cohozuna. Amazingly we somehow didn't have hightide so that worked in our favor too.

HUGELY disappointed with the spoils though...you barely get anything for beating him. Not even a golden scale (though they look like clams to me). Just 10 bronze and 4 silver...

Thank you to everyone who dissuaded me from purposely dropping rank.

First of all, congratulations on beating Cohozuna! 🎉

Getting 4 silver scales is really good! I would sometimes only receive 10 bronze scales. 😅 For informative purposes, here is a Tweet explaining the mechanisms behind the scale rewards! The rate of getting rarer scales (e.g., gold scales) depends on your hazard level, so if you’re looking for better rewards, I’d highly recommend not deranking! Since the percentages are really low, you would mainly receive a combination of bronze/silver scales. As for the amount you receive, it depends on how fast you beat cohozuna (how much time remains) and how much HP Cohozuna has left.

Here is a video (English version) detailing which bosses the egg cannon is more effective against. I hope these will be of some help! 😊

really? complete opposite with me. All these high rank players i ended up with kept failing me everytime with this boss.

I have beaten it twice.
The first time was a good match up and the second time was during the first time Grizzco weapons was used.

Nope. I don't have a lot of time for Splatoon3 these days sadly so I only Salmon Run whenever rotation changes for hats...or if someone wants to play...sad life lol.

I've beaten him a couple times but never gotten a gold scale before. Then the other day we lost to him & got 2??

I do agree it's disappointing how win/lose doesn't make much of a difference. I wish there was more incentive to beating him. Hopefully they'll change the way scales drop in a future update (and give us better drops from big run!)

Beat him for the 2nd time, once again thankfully low tide...and all we got was 9 copper scales.

On a side note this may be the last Splatoon game for me. Like always, I'm enjoying Salmon Run...but the other areas of the game I just find kinda 'meh'. I think I'm only at level 15/16 because frankly it takes too long to level up and I lose interest quickly.

Finally beat him for a second time. The map, tide, weapon set and skill level of your teammates really make a difference in being able to defeat him.
