Guys I have been playing online video games for 15 years and having been an admin for a top server, let me tell you, the internet used to be full of extremely nicer people who followed the rules and played the game for it's purpose and to make friends.
I had over hundreds and hundreds of online video game friends...in fact my current boyfriend that I've known for 13 years is one that I met from an online video game community.
When I was 18 years old (almost 10 years ago thats depressing as heck) the online gaming community started to be introduced with "trolls," and get on the decline. Now, it's all there really is.
I used to be an admin for a server so I've dealt with people's behavior for a while which used to be very tolerable and the most biggest offense was just not playing by the rules. Being an admin NOW you literally risk you life. When I was 20 and still an admin for a server, I temporarily kicked a player for putting another player's IP on blast.
This no-life ended up making a WEBSITE about me, by stalking me and gathering my information, where I live, my phone numbers, pictures of me, information about my family, and going on these messed up forums asking for someone to kill me as he provides information and he'll pay money.
He also swatted my best friend (in real life) who was playing with me by reporting that she shot and killed someone in her house and she ended up having over 15 police vehicles on her street.
I reported this online harassment to the police, even provided the website, but they couldn't do much and just said ignore him.
I ended up just having to quit the game for good because it wasn't worth it. And I really loved that game too.
Point is, online video gaming has turned to poop over the years and it really use to be pleasant and even addicting time when you played with normal people who were behaving how they would in real life. I have no idea what is going on or what will happen with the culture on the internet anymore.
Yea its worse now. You got doxing, swatting, and social media smear campaigns. Its probably only to get worse as technology advances. Stay safe out there mods and streamers.

I think in some ways, the Animal Crossing community has been the less toxic i've come across. I was part of the Socom community, COD, and others smaller communities. I've seen it all within the years.
