so, here's the thing. my family got a nintendo switch and ac:nh early this year and because of the game dev's stupid, inane save file system we've so far had to share one island. (i'll try to not go on about my dislike of the 'one island per switch' rule, but i mean. come the f word on...) we have separate users so we each have our own character but same island, basically. but i might be able to get my own switch to have my own island soon, but i want to ask a few questions about the process of transferring my character onto my new island:

- would transferring my user transfer my character with it? or are they separate processes?
- do i need two copies of ac:nh to do the transfer or is one alright?
- would the process create a new island? and would my character just be there?
- would all my storage items be there even though my current save has a bigger storage than the one you start with?

and one of the biggest questions i have:
- what if, after the transfer, i decide that i don't like the island i get? (i want to get a specific fruit: either oranges or pears.) would i be able to easily try again for a better island? and would my transferred character still be there or would they disappear?

any help would be appreciated!

EDIT: two things i want to specify:

1. the copy of ac:nh is physical. i probably won't be able to get another copy for ac:nh along with a switch because hey! nintendo likes to charge out the ass for games now!
2. i'm not transferring the entire island. it's not mine.

So when I transfered to my Switch lite I had to get a new copy.

When I swapped my island, I used this island transfer, free download from the e store, to swap my islands. So my guess is that it will be the entire island, and not just you, everyone.

All of your progress, and data goes with you.

Because my other switch no longer had ACNH data stored, due to the transfer, it was a new game.

Okay I need to ask some questions since I have 2 switches and 2 copies of the game, did you have only one copy of the game if its digital or physical? And also did you create a new account so you can have the other person have their own island on the other switch? Finally its important to note that if you delete your save file on the other switch it will be gone and there is way to recover it so if you were doing a transfer and you somehow delete your save file after the transfer it will not show up on the other switch.

You don't ave to worry about still having your old island there, all the data will be on the new one. So it would be a fresh start

Ig you delete the file, Im pretty sure that would delete it on the other, if its the same island.

Yes i had two copies, one downloaded, and one physical. If your just swapping two islands, then it would just be a swap.

Just use the island E Transfer from the store, free download, and you should have no problem just swapping them. No need to delete anything.

Hmm okay so you do have both a digital and physical copy. Interesting. So another thing did you create a new account for the 2nd switch because here's the thing about the digital version can make this complicated is if the user who bought the game tries to redownload it the 2nd switch then there is a restriction that prevents for being able to play. If you create a new user and they don't own the game it will not work.

The way to do this is to "De-register" the main switch that owns the game and then use the 2nd switch to re-register so the new user can play the game on the 2nd switch. The only downside is that you need to have internet access on the main switch to play the game because it will give this "Checking to see if the software can be played" and the thing is that it has to be played on only one switch but with the same account at the same time.

Yeah it sounds complex I know, but thats just how the digital version works if you tried to put it on the other switch whereas with the physical version you just have to eject it from the other switch

Just use the Island transfer app, if I remember correctly you dont havebto do anything like that.

I did create a new profile though,

Just use the island transfer app, its free in the the store, and doesn't really require any of that,

Its a super easy switch :) I did make a new profile on the new switch, to put it on though

Well okay the thing is I never used Island Transfer before so I don't know how it works well.

but... it's not my island? i'm not going to transfer an entire island that doesn't belond to me, just my 1 character.

and shouldn't i be able to use the same copy? like, wasn't the whole thing that i just need another switch for a new island, or is it even more inane than that?

woops, i probably should have specified in op. but yeah, it's a physical copy of ac:nh. and i created a new account.

and i guess trying for new islands will be out then... or rather, i'll have to back up all my stuff beforehand.

this site should answer most of your questions

it says i need two copies? wow, that is some beans. god damn nintendo why did you have to make this system the worst way possible, i mean hell...

Well I hate to tell you this but since you have a physical copy, you need a 2nd one and a 2nd switch in order to play on a new island and also you need to create a new account on that switch.

Oh opps, I must have misread how you only wanted to transfer one character. Sorry.

Yeah, sadly you still probably need two copies. it sucks. Maybe if you just use ypur own nintendo account you'll be able to bring your own person.

But I think it will still just take the whole island. Not 100% though

????
a new account??? am i not able to move my account over to the new switch now either???
and of course nintendo expects everyone to just shell out? what? 260$ if they want their own island. like, putting a hard limit on islands is stupid enough on it's own, but apparently they couldn't even stick to ACNL style of one island/town per cart? it worked just fine but god forbid nintendo doesn't charge as much as they can for everything. screw it, i'll probably just get hat in time or something...

Yeah it does suck and I will agree about the "One island per switch issue" I knew this was going to cause problems. If you had a digital copy instead of physical copy you would've been able to redownload the game to the 2nd switch, but like I said in the previous post the person who owns the game is allowed to play it, but when re-reregister the main switch and then re-register with the 2nd switch the new user can play the game on the 2nd switch and have their own island to start out with.

No, ou can still use yours, you just can only have one game on f you wanna go online to say visit someone

I had both on at the same time because i wanted to copy custom designs, its just if you wanna go visit one on the same account, you can't

Speaking off online there is one thing I should mention. If you have two copies of the game you can visit your other island via local online, but if you only have a digital copy and try to do the same thing it doesn't work because the other person doesn't own the game, which is weird to me.

i'm so confused. so are you saying i can only have... one game... on my account... god my brain is hemorrhaging trying to understand what you're saying, please specify.

I think what they are trying to say is that, you need to have another game, another switch, and another account in order to play on a 2nd island.

By saying "ou can still use yours"? That didn't sound like needing a separate game, switch *and* account...

I think they were trying to say "You can still use yours" I guess what they meant to say was you can still your account on your switch and I think they meant to say that at the same time still having a 2nd copy of the game and a 2nd switch to play at the same time just with different accounts. I hope that makes more sense.

I... don't think that's right. I have two islands on two different Switches and am able to go online on both. I also only have one copy of the game. The only thing I can't do is play both simultaneously.
...Though I also don't know if I'd be able to transfer one resident from one game to start a new one on the second Switch.
