how do you hold a plot?

cube is leaving (will be in boxes tomorrow, actually gone wednesday) and i'm hoping to keep him there - or at least keep his plot - until the update so i can descend on the islands in search of one of the new villagers. maybe i'm just blind but i cant find anything online explaining it

Are you willing to time travel? There's no other way.
If you are, either hover on his day in boxes and don't let it pass 6 AM, or stay on the day the plot is empty and don't let the clock pass 6 AM the next day.

Stay on the chosen date until the update drops, pick up the update, and once it's verified everything is in order, then either TT until the plot is empty, or, if it is already empty, get your search on. :>

Marty asked to leave today (I have TT'd back in time to kick out villagers), so I'm going to keep the date the same as today until the update drops.
