Presume the next Nintendo console is strictly confined to a TV. How big of a loss would this be to you?

I wouldn't feel it as a massive loss since my preference is on a couch with a controller. But I do like taking it off the dock sometimes and playing before bed, so I would miss that aspect.

I honestly don’t think I’ll get the next console if it isn’t portable. Handheld has always been my preferred way to play games, and I’m not interested in consoles or games that can’t be played handheld. I’m focusing more on what games will release on the next console and if it’ll be backwards compatible than portability, but the games and console functions will have to be really enticing to convince me to get it if it’s not portable.

To be honest, there's an extremely high chance it would mean that I won't get the next Nintendo console. My family shares a TV, so I'd have to be careful what times I game so I wouldn't be interrupting anyone else's free time, and I don't really like people looking at my screen when I play games either, which is... kind of inevitable on a living room TV. I also play games a lot while watching something in the background, so that wouldn't be doable anymore either. Really, the only time I ever actually play a game on our PS4 is if I'm playing Minecraft with family.

I know I'd basically never use a tv-only console and getting it would be a huge waste of money, so if that happens it'll be a pass from me. I'd jump ship to whatever console brand wants to do a handheld console next.

I agree with not desiring others to watch the screen. Our switch is downstairs in the living room, right near the front door with lots of activity. Pretty much unplayable to me around lots of noise.

I strictly play at night or late into the evening.

Also hesitant to take it off the dock and take away from younger family members who want to spend time on it.

I wouldn’t mind, but I’d think it was a missed opportunity since I think Nintendo is better as a handheld manufacturer than a console one. Their focus on affordability over high specs works better for handhelds since those can’t have the strongest tech anyway. Some of Nintendo’s biggest series like Pokémon or Animal Crossing are also better suited for short sessions rather than long ones, which is perfect for the portability and ease of use of handhelds.

I wouldn't mind since I prefer to play video games on bigger screens whenever possible, whether that be on a television or computer monitor, and only really play handhelds when they're the only options for the games I'm interested in. I strictly play my Switch docked. That said, I do appreciate that the Switch, even with the dock, is so small and easily portable compared to something like a PS5 or XBox. I've taken the Switch on a trip with me before and it's nice. It would be unfortunate to not be able to do that with the next Nintendo system, but yeah, it's not a make it or break it factor for me.

It's not a huge deal, but I do like the portability. I have an XBOX Series X that I like to keep hooked up to my television. I'd rather not have two consoles hooked up to it at a time, so my Switch Lite is perfect. It keeps the two separated.

I don't usually desire to get Nintendo consoles quickly. I didn't even get a Switch Lite until more recently. The games I prefer to play are released on the XBOX. I'd only get the Nintendo console if more than a few games pique my interest. The only game that would make me actually want to go out and get the new console would probably be Mario Kart, and even then, it wouldn't be immediate.

Portability isn't necessary, but it's preferred.

I honestly wouldn’t get it if it is tv only. I got the switch because I could get the switch lite. I love my handhelds. Also I share a tv in the living room . I have a PS4 that doesn’t get much use since I am rarely home by myself.

I’d like it to be handheld. I still haven’t hooked up my tv or other consoles since I moved here 😅 since I don’t watch tv and I’ve been enjoying using my switch lite (and now my new Switch) a lot more than my other consoles. I have no plans on getting the new system right away either way, since I’m still really happy overall with the switch and just got my switch not to long ago (before I was using a switch lite).

Truthfully, I'll buy it either way, but portability is important to me! It's less important that I can take it outside my house, and more just that I like playing in handheld mode most often. I really like having the choice between playing docked and handheld, though.

I mean I'm sure I would get, but nintendo dropping the handheld market would be honestly in the top 3 dumbest business decisions in all of history, so I seriously don't see that happening

if anything, they'd be more likely to ditch the connect-to-tv consoles market in favor of a full handheld approach. as the handheld market has honestly always been their biggest strength since they entered it

It would really suck tbh. I love handhelds. I love being able to play wherever I want in the house and bring it with me wherever I go.

It was very important to me pre-pandemic, when I travelled a lot more and had a long commute.

Nowadays I only really game in my living room, but I do still like the option of being able to play portable when my partner wants to use the television.

I think it was the phone and mobile game market which had pushed Nintendo away from full handheld to begin with. 3DS sales declined from the original DS, which happened around the emergence of everybody having a smartphone. Hence, now there is a hybrid console.

I would love to see another full dedicated handheld. But it's easier for them to embrace mobile games rather than try to compete with that industry. So now we have stuff such as Pocket Camp and Mario Run.

For me it's definitely important!

At the time when I got my Switch I opted for the Switch Lite model because I didn't even own a TV at the time. I mostly play single player games anyway and being able to play quietly without bothering anyone is very much my style. Now I have a different living room set up and I do definitely miss the ability to play on a big TV a little bit (for local multi player Mario Party and Mario Kart specifically).

I think the Switch was on to something with the ability to do both and I hope Nintendo sticks to that idea. If they don't though then I would prefer a handheld only console.
