How many visiting persona can you have at a given time?

Yesterday I missed Joan but I found Katie was visiting. After she went to another town I reached 1.000.000 bells, after which I found Phinneas wandering around in town. This morning Phinneas was still there to give me another badge, which I forgot to take yesterday apparently. After he was gone I went to the beach where I found Gulliver lying on the floor.

So many visitors in such a short time. You can have multiple ones in a 24h period?

I had gulliver on the beach and joan last week. Then pascal came as I dived for a scallop. I also had over 10 visitors from other towns that day

I always thought only 1 could appear on a day, or maybe that was just in older games.

Katie can be in your town even if someone else is there (Redd, Joan, Saharah, whoever). I had Phinneas show up after Joan left yesterday. I had hoped to get the Gold Turnip Badge before Joan came on Sunday, but didn't, so I bought more turnips. Then Joan left and Phinneas showed up to give me my Gold Badge. I hate the stalk market.
So I know that Katie can be there with others, maybe Phinneas can be also (I guess I just couldn't find him when Joan was still around).
I hate that you have to go hunting for Special Visitors. They should stay at the Town Plaza (except Gulliver & Katie and of course Pascal in the ocean).

They will all respond to the megaphone if you know they're in town (I check with Copper a couple times a day to see who's hanging around). The megaphone also wakes Gulliver right up, which cracks me up.
