It's because they'll land on a cliff, but they're not supposed to land on furniture or buildings. I've noticed balloons will go around some larger furniture pieces on my island such as fossils but not others, which they just bounce through (or disappear).

I've never paid attention to the reaction it had with furniture or even buildings. Balloons have acted strange around cliffs at times, sometimes rather than going straight across, sort of going south.
I just saw this before on my fyp but as much as I hate not getting any balloons at all I can not be bothered to line up my beaches like this haha but if anyone does do it and it works I am happy for you
I'm going to do this, but only on my east beach. That's where they spawn during the daytime and I recently cleared that beach so I could get more clams. I've been pretty successful with grinding on the beach, but not having to run up and down would be great.
Edited to add: I just realized that won't work. I have a river outlet on the east side and the balloons will end up going through there. Oh, well. I was ready to dismantle what's on my west beach, so I'll do it there. I usually play early in the morning, so I'll concentrate on that.
I don't know if you get a higher chance of getting them once the seasons are about to change. But I happened to get three mushroom diys i was missing today. That or I just got real lucky because it was a real stuggle before. Haha.

It doesn't look like the 4 minute or 9 minute thing is always true as someone stated on Twitter. It's a tedious process still, as the balloons don't mean you'll get these DIYs each time. I've only gotten two mush DIYs so far and I've just been getting other things instead. Actually, I may have just gotten all the mush DIYs now that I'm looking at my DIY list.

Perhaps there is a higher chance? Or maybe you've been lucky so far. I think I've completed my mush DIY list.

Creating a wall is pretty ugly looking, but has been helpful.
I've spent hours doing this (without anything blocking them) and this is what I've found. Balloons don't spawn every 4 and 9, but when they do spawn, that's when they do it. I actually don't start going up the beach 'til 0 and 5 to give it time to actually reach the beach. I've read that they won't spawn if there's one somewhere over the island. So, if you miss one, or the wind is weak, it won't spawn. I'm interested to see how blocking affects the spawning if that's true.
This process pretty much ensures that you won't miss the balloon, though, since if it starts from the north, it'll come down to the south rather than heading straight east or west. But there's no right or wrong way of waiting for balloons and popping them. I just thought I'd bring this up to hopefully simplify things.
True. But this can prove helpful for those who are busy.
I work hours in front of the computer and I can just leave my game open and let the wall do the work of moving the balloon towards me. I also don't have to check every 5 minutes.
But then again, you can do whatever works for you. This is material-heavy (iron nuggets) or can be expensive (rock-climbing walls).
