I played NL a lot at release and then again after WA and I've picked it back up again this year.

Anyways, I remember people used to care a lot about preserving villager's homes and not letting them litter the place with fish and fossils etc. This was especially important when selling high valued villagers with their original homes in tact.

Obviously no such market exists for trading villagers anymore (RIP 3ds and Wii U servers) but I would like to preserve the homes of my dreamies!

edit - I have found this guide which is pretty good:

I'm not sure of all the methods, but one that I’ve always followed is to place your own furniture (or even shells and flowers) in Re-Tail so villagers don't remove their own furniture and sell it there.
Also don't accept requests for getting fish, bugs, fossils, clothes, or furniture. They can place clothes in their house if they don't wear it I think.
