I can't customize certain items that should(?) be customizable?

Hey all, this is my first time posting to a forum in years so sorry if i make some dumb mistakes.

Online, I've seen variants of color in furniture pieces that I have, for example, the gothic mirror and popcorn machine, but when i go to customize these items, it seems to not be possible. On one hand, I could just be completely misremembering or missing something obvious, but if anyone has any insight, that'd be appreciated!

edit: i forgot to mention that, I do have customization kits on hand when doing this so it's not just me forgetting to do that aha

broooo. I noticed this exact same thing.

I had the Nook Miles incentive to go customize some stuff so I went into my storage and just grabbed a bunch of random furniture. I had like a toaster and some chair that I KNOW exist in different colors. And they didn't appear as available to craft at all. Like wtf???

I am wondering if this is a little sign that Reese and Cyrus might make a return? But tbh..... I have no idea how they're gonna do that. They need to hurry too lol, I'm actually really bummed by these horrible limitations! Now I have soooo many extra paint things with nothing to do with them lol. It's frustrating.

Yep I think it's a decision Nintendo made to incetivize the trading aspect of the game. Like I have two different portable record players, one blue and one orange, I got the orange one in another island's shop.

I have a yellow and blue fragrance dispenser so i KNOW they come in different colors, the fact that I can't customize them to change it is a real let down

I have some items that I'm positive have different options as well. Kind of baffling.

My theory is it's something to with having the recipe for the item vs. buying it from the Nooklings/receiving it as a gift? Like may have to have the recipe/be able to craft it in order to customize it? Just a theory.

Yeah, it seems possible there are items that are customizable, and items that you can simply just find in variants. Currently, it seems like only crafting items are customizable. Things like the popcorn machine can only be found/bought, and are not customizable.
