I'm so torn

I like the historical/ancient themes/sub-themes I have, but the idea of making some areas more modern appeal to me since I love some items like the drink machines and snack machines. I guess I might consider mixing it up a bit; so far my island looks more like a continent with some different culture going on, so maybe it might not end up being as big of a problem as I worry it being.

My ideas are all over the place right now. I worry about consistency and them not flowing into each other well.
I think historical/modern can blend nicely! Some mixed elements look (in my opinion) especially interesting. I like whimsical/either gritty reality or tech, dilapidated/elegant, and mixed era stuff. Very cool:)

I think mine is 1/4 town, 1/4 wilderness, and 1/2 gardens! Though I'm changing up my town area right now so it looks a bit barren. Lots of pumpkins though.

Oh man, I feel this on a deep level. I opted for the "suburb" look with some mountains by my house and then more of a vilalge feel down by the villager houses and town center. Thinking about making another account so I can add a second house, too, because dang I CANNOT decide on themes for my rooms! I want too many things and people do such clever things that I want to try out myself ... guh! xD I hope you figure out something that works for you!

easy: make it suburban. nice mix of natural garbage inhabited by the modern world

I think everyone has already told you this, but you could always just divvy up your island to be natural and modern. Maybe even have it somehow be natural all around and in the middle is the urban setting.

Or you could test it out and see if you like the natural look or urban look better. Like a little test strip you would do when trying out a color of paint before painting the whole piece.

My island is half and half. The left side is more natural, while the right side is more civilized.

The left side has a lake, the campsite, a short hiking trail, and a farm. Meanwhile, all my villagers' houses, shops, museum, and a park are on the right.

At first, my Island was a mix of a uniform, modern central with a naturalistic mountain and campground. It was okay at first, but it made navigating rather boring, and the modern part still looked dull to me.

Now, I decided to go more towards a natural core, with homes scattered everywhere, lots of trees, and a cleanly flowing river. But even then, I use fancy, well planned decor here and there that does feel modern, yet blends in with the natural feel of the layout. It's kind of hard to describe, but you can check my dream of Everbloom in my signature to give a idea of what I've done.

I keep changing the look of my island and it’s starting to stress me out haha I went for a tropical theme at first but now I am liking the nature look like you of waterfalls and so on so I keep changing it and I can’t find a look I like :(

ugh i felt this post right in my soul OP. i go thru screenshots on here and tumblr and i just see so many beautifully done themes. it's hard to decide what i want to do, but i also don't think i'd live with having 2 or more themes for my island bc that requires skills & artistic planning that i simply do not have at the moment lol

i'd always start off my islands with the intention of going thru with specific themes but then i'd end up browsing somewhere acnh-related and i'd change my mind and it felt like my island was just stuck with the theme i started with so i'd just end up resetting again. i've now reached the point where, with my current save, i just went into it knowing that i lack a lot of the practice and skill required to pull off some of the themes i'd love to do, so i'm planning to make a basic little neighborhood to start out with and then slowly develop my island into a more complex "theme". i think i just got caught up on wanting to replicate a theme or idea so badly that i wasn't really thinking about how forcing it to work isn't the same as actually making it work, u know? i also just don't really know what i want to do, so any theme that caught my attention was what i wanted to do at the time even if it's something i won't end up liking forever. i mean i could still keep my islands, but man. when u mess up terraforming sometimes it's just too bad u can't do much else except delete.

anyway i hope ur able to find a solution for ur problems (it seems u already have!!), so i wish u the best of luck. it may seem silly to worry about this to some ppl, but i Understand the Frustration.

Definitely half and half. That way you get the best of both worlds!
