Is it worth it to buy a 2nd copy of the game?

Well its only if you are doing island transfer or trying to play local play. It is kinda rubbish how they forced you have a 2nd copy of the game just to play local co-op online. If you had a digital copy it is possible to redownload the game and let someone else play it but it involves de-registering the switch just to play it, which can get annoying, which is why I had to get the 2nd copy. Its the same issue if you were to get a physical copy. I must say Nintendo really screwed people over with this restriction. It is confusing to figure out I will admit.
the loophole my husband and I have found (and I apologize if they have fixed it since )
was that both of us had our nintendo online subscription, and then we can bypass the whole 'youre playing on the same game on two different consoles' shenanigans.

but I understand paying two online subscriptions might be counter productive and at that point it's better off to just buy the game twice...

depends how much trading/online play you're actually going to do on either accounts.

Yeah if you want to just play by yourself and not do online trading then local play is the best option but if you want to do trade on both accounts you do need to have a second online membership to do that
