Is the local multiplayer that existed in Wild World and New Leaf gone?

Good grief.

Obviously now (and this was an excellent feature to add IMO) we can have multiplayer in New Horizons by having multiple joy-cons on the same Switch. However, will local multiplayer between two Switch systems not be available like how you could do it between two DSes in WW or two 3DSes in NL that were close to one another? Of course, the same-console multiplayer is confirmed, as well as Wi-Fi that we've had in every game since WW, but do you think the local multiplayer from WW and NL that was between consoles has been removed again? (Of course, it would've been impractical for Nintendo to add it to City Folk, considering that game was on a home console, but the Switch, unlike the Wii, is both a home and handheld console)

I'm pretty sure what they showed off is co-op on the same switch. The other villager was one of the 7 other profiles you can create on your switch and those people live on your island if you share your switch or just want more people. The reason they were close to one another is because they were sharing the same screen. I'd imagine local wireless and online play will work the same as previously with some minor changes.

During the Treehouse stream they confirmed that the mode shown is for people who actually "live" on the same switch. Regular local and online multiplayer between multiple devices still exists!

Ok guys, I appreciate all of this! (And even though this is my thread, it got buried back beneath all the new threads, I had to go all the way back to the third page) I just had a friend tell me that local multiplayer akin to WW/NL had likely been removed in NH, so I was just trying to make sure.

Also, one more question about the game: does anyone know if we can do the online multiplayer/local wireless at the same time as co-op with another islander?

why would they ever get rid of a core aspect of the games?

it'd be like if they revealed there actually are no animals in the next animal crossing

No, local multiplayer is still there, don't worry. If you saw that plane on the map, I'm assuming that's what we're using to travel.
