Our unit had possibly suffered the greatest casualty rate of any in the war, at nearly 80%. Was it really worth it for five of our own to die to eradicate two of theirs? Regardless, with the
Traitors dead, it was time to march upon Seoul and liberate occupied Korea
To
Dad's credit he didn't surrender, even when it was abundantly clear that the end was upon him. He worked hard to at first to discredit
Vanessa as being a
Traitor, after all, how could a skilled medic be allowed to exist in Korea during the Second World War without collaborating with the Japanese Imperialist? Her background, and thus her
songbun, were suspect.
Locket had no doubts though.
Vanessa's training came from Pyongyang and she played a vital role in her unit as a
Combat Medic, though she did seem a more than a little disturbed by the allegations that
Dad put forward.
Exhausted, even knowing that he was done for and found out,
Dad still attempted to persuade them. "Your fighting for the wrong side!" He desparetly yelled. Kim Il Sung is a Soviet Puppet! He wasn't even born in Korea! As he was strung up he mentioned this:
"We were just pawns on a chessboard, that's all Korea is, an ideological battleground between two opponents. Both of you are pawns, even I'm a pawn, but none of us have any real power. Kim Il Sung himself doesn't have autonomy, he owes what he has to the Soviets and the Chinese Communists. The real players are safe, and will never be known. But know this, even in communist Korea, money will talk."

Pusan had fallen
Or been liberated, even now it was hard to tell.
Locket's faith in the Juche cause had been shaken, the things had she had witnessed during the war had made even what little they knew of Japan's activities seem tame.
Vanessa wasn't shocked, or at least wasn't showing it, and seemed markedly at all that was happening around them. The executions, the fighting, what they did to the prisoners.
Locket thought that maybe there was some truth to what
Dad had accused her of, but he didn't know it. He was simply trying to stay alive. Despite all that was happening though,
Locket did feel like something went wrong, like the Pusan offensive was supposed to succeed, like it should have failed by some unknown law of nature.
The Americans had been driven from Korea, but was it really a victory? It felt like a dark shade of grey had been traded away for a slightly darker one.
Dad did end up being right about
Vanessa. She did end up surviving the war, but during a check on her activities in 1957, in relation to her connections with a WPK member in poor standing, it was discovered that she was a collaborator with a Japanese Unit. This wouldn't have been much of an issue if she had been a conscript, or even a volunteer in another unit. The Unit though placed her on an unsavory path: from 1943 through 1945 she was a member of Unit 731: a Japanese covert Biological research unit. It seems like her end was the most justified, though perhaps it was most unjust that she survived longest.
Locket's fate was perhaps most unique of the group's. Haunted by what she had seen, she never was fully able to reconcile with either Korea. She believed that elections and the people's will were the most important aspects of a state, and felt out of place in the dress-up "democracy". In 1952,
Locket, still stationed in Pusan, found a group of civilians attempting to reach Japan by boat. Her commander ordered her to fire upon the drifting raft, she refused and was shot. The fleeing refuges later drowned, enjoying 24 hours of freedom confined to a floating prison
