Last Update?

They may add more updates for the DLC, but they are practically not free (you need to buy the DLC). That's why they said no more free updates (for the main game)

Update =/= DLC imo

I'm not saying we are getting more DLC, but final free or just final update could mean they will focus on paid content in the future

I think I saw another post on here saying that they were going to not have any more paid DLC either. I can't remember where the article was from but it was translated from Japanese. But I feel like that's a significant enough statement to not be twisted even by bad translation.

. . . Also, it's worth remembering they specifically said there were things not shown. Now, are those things just furniture items (as in "we've added a bunch of sets, we couldn't show everything)? Or are they slipping in something like shop upgrades? At this point, there's no way to tell, but I'd say there's still hope for some stuff.

Ah, yes! I caught this the first time I watched it. I can't tell if they mean that just by 'additional crops', 'additional Nook Miles items', 'additional furnitures' or if they mean that by actual content. I want to be conservative in my expectations and say the former. But my heart yearns for the latter, and that maybe there's still a shop upgrade, maybe there's the QoL things like bulk crafting bait, and maybe there's Gracie Grace and the other NPCs in some sort of capacity. But I also feel like it'd be weird for them to leave it out of there WERE major content additions.

If this DLC is a success, they will probably add something. Like the campground update to new leaf.

I'm pretty content with the game, but here are some things I wish we have (this are personal and some are not realistic)
Gracie and Cooper/ Booker
Nook's upgrade
More hair colors or dual tones
Bulk buying and crafting

Non realistic
12-15 villager per island
Implementing the roommate system in our islands, if this happens we could get 20 villagers with the same plots available.

Besides that I think the game is complete for me, I'm not a huge online player so mini games are not my top priority.

Most of the team has been on Splatoon 3 for a year, so it's not surprising. The next console will also likely come out in 2023, so they're probably working on the next AC game soon given they tend to release one per console.

I agree the phrasing is peculiar, but I'm taking it at face value and do believe this is the last significant update (apart from holidays, seasonal items, and if we're lucky, maybe small QoL).

The other thing I'd add is most of the datamines and leakers have been very accurate in predicting future additions and most of the loose ends have been tied up now. I think some of the HHP stuff can even be traced back to the first datamine from April 2020. If something interesting shows up in the 2.0 datamine, maybe there could be a reason to get excited again, but right now, as far as I know, there's not really anything to suggest more paid DLC.

I doubt we will see a new AC game soon, new leaf was released in 2012 and city folk in 2008, and the first two 2005 and 2001. This game is 1 and a half years old, so I think it's going to be a while for a new one, also 2020 was the perfect year fo AC, hopefully in 2023+ we are not in the same situation. So I think they will consider that too. The success of ACNH was in part to people not going out. 11 friends that have never played before bought it and stop playing two months after release, I doubt we will see this phenomenon with AC again :(

That sucks, especially since they promised 3 years of updates. At the very least they should give us the real Tortimer's Island with multiplayer and minigames.

My translation said, literal: "Last big free update"

Actually that was a misunderstanding. They said that the content should last for years of enjoyment, not that the updates themselves would continue.

If so, do you know if the Japanese ACNH fanbase has been critiquing the game the same way that the American/European fanbase has? Maybe they are more lax with their terminology with the Japanese fanbase because their behavior regarding the game has been less critical?
this is an interesting point! for some of the previous updates this year i actually took a peek at the official japanese AC twitter (@/doubutsuno_mori) and went through the replies to see what japanese fans were saying. i don't speak the language, so all i had to rely on was the famously unreliable google translate, but it seemed to me that while there were some unsatisfied commenters, there were less than in the replies to @/animalcrossing, and they were tonally softer.

then again, i suppose the tonal difference could have been because of google translate... but yeah, certainly seemed to be fewer complaints.

(for what's it worth, i understand the frustration that a lot of people were displaying in the replies to @/animalcrossing, i don't mean to shame anyone for being unsatisfied with this observation. maybe they didn't go about expressing it in a constructive way, but i do get how they felt.)

Hmm, I think the actual quote of "new surprises in 2 or 3 years" does imply that though. But that's just my interpretation, Animal Crossing's never been the series to deviate from the weekly and yearly schedule.

We'll probably get more DLC and at the least a Nook Cranny upgrade. The prior if the upcoming DLC sells well and Nintendo realizes just how much money they can make from the game.

I didn't say it would be soon. I wouldn't expect the title until 2024 or 2025 at the earliest. I only said they're probably starting on it soon, given then they tend to spend several years working on each Animal Crossing game. And it's not like the entire team will be on it from the start.

Maybe new NPC characters or furnishing sets/clothes

What I'm really curious about is how DLC owners and players without it will co exist. Can I gift them DLC items for example?
theyt have also said this will be the only paid update as well

Yah, I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the least exciting ("worst" doesn't seem like the right term, since honestly anything will be good). The good news is, even just the stuff they showed is more than enough for me for me to stay excited!

I think major updates, like someone said, are the specific v2, v3, etc updates. Even when we got Redd as a visitor + the art room at the museum, it wasn't considered a 'major' update like this direct was. I think there's plenty of potential for them to add in more NPC's, maybe an observatory, and a credible leaker on Twitter (leaked the entire direct a few days before) said they were surprised this direct didn't cover the Nooklings Updates they supposedly know about. I think that more content is coming, we just won't get an entire 20 min direct ever again and it'll go back to the 1-3 minute videos on social media.

I do find it weird that the Japanese Direct used content instead of major, since major != content for me and pretty much everybody else it looks like. Like it'd be easy enough to say "Last free update with new content" if there's truly no more content coming after this, yet they didn't? Definitely feels like something got lost in translation here, since they should be consistent across all languages. Since, as has been pointed out in this thread, by semantic versioning standards, the "last free major update" from the English Direct would mean that we won't get a v3.0, but it does mean we could still get a v2.1, v2.2, etc. Whereas the "last content update" from the Japanese Direct means it'd just be stuck on v2.0.z forever, with Z just being any patch updates that come out. That is the literal interpretation of it through semantic versioning, though, in theory they could keep leaving it so that the holidays need to be unlocked through updates (which has been done in the minor updates) yet not add any new content to them.

Unless Nintendo clarifies this before the update, all we can really do is wait and see if the data miners find something when the update drops that would point to more updates with content coming out.
