Lesser-known Media Discussion Thread

Yeah. But at the same time, I didn't realise it gained so much popularity until New Leaf.

Do you mean you don't realize it gained popularity until New Leaf, or do you mean you didn't realize that it didn't get too popular until New Leaf?

There's this cool manga I'm reading called The Girl from the Other Side. It's creepy and stands out as a unique piece overall just a few issues in. There's also this amazing Spanish animation that came out worldwide on video recently called Birdboy: the Forgotten Children. It's brilliantly hand drawn and feels like a macabre Ghibli film. Don't expect Japanese-style animation though, this is quite unique. It's not for everyone though as its themes and imagery can be downright brutal (violent, adult, etc.). Definitely worth your time if you're looking for something original.

That's it for recent stuff. As for something older, I recommend this old cartoon called Mission Hill. It's short, but worth looking up if you like young adult humor. The voice cast is excellent.

Old, good shows people here might like? A few people seem to like the gothic stuff. Not many talk about the good Canadian shows.

Here is Ruby Gloom.

OH MY GOD. I love this show!! I didn't know it was Canadian so that makes it even better. ;) I should switch my avatar and sig to Doom. <3

Well, I eventually noticed my brothers and their friends stop playing and that nobody would really talk about it in the gaming community I integrated myself into. So, I guess I accepted that it wasn't popular at that point. And so, yeah, the first thing you said, that I didn't realize it gained popularity until New Leaf. That was mostly because of this website, how Nintendo is now presenting it, and seeing a lot more cosplayers repping AC characters. The fact that there are spin-offs now says something, popularity of those themselves aside.

I see how I was unclear. :p

Pretty much any tv show or form of entertainment I watch is not popular at least they're not anymore.

I'm still watching M*A*S*H, Seinfeld (still pretty popular), Or I'll watch documentaries of prisons or major traumatic events in history, most games I play are older

I'm just stuck in the 90's lol

M*A*S*H is life M*A*S*H is love. I hate Seinfeld with a passion though but I know the series though.

And yea we need more M*A*S*H lovers... I love both the movie and the tv series, they are pretty different but good in their owns ways.

I dont know a lot of people outside of my circle of friends who know about puyo puyo, so its nice to see a rando know about it. im not into the game as i was last year but ever since ppt i feel like its been getting noticed more

Here is an oldie from PBS cancelled in 1993. Long Ago and Far Away. Introduced and Narrated by many celebrities of the time, including James Earl Jones. Some shows had Claymation, some traditionally animated. I really like this intro, you can see the passion he has for weaving a tale, though the low quality of the vhs cassette transfer:

The one I remember from way back is this one based off a Russian folk tale:

This video doesn't have the intro in tact.

Good taste. I think more creators were willing to take risks, or drugs back then.

I know another one. The Wacky Adventutes of Ronald McDonald. As we are currently living in a time when the fast food chains that dominated the industry (i.e. McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell) are losing popularity while others (such as Chick-fil-A and In-N-Out) are outplacing them in popularity, when kids meals and indoor playgrounds at fast foods are phasing out, and when kids with no memory of the McDonald's mascot characters (Ronald McDonald, Grimace, Hamburglar, Birdie) are reaching adulthood, The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald is fading to obscurity. It will become a show that nobody will know.

The show is rather silly, as the episodes' plots are not like other cartoon plots. But it's worth watching. I have not seen that show in a very long time.

Dear White People is an amazing Netflix show that no one seems to give any credit, despite the provocative title it really doesn't shove anything down ur throat and shows a lot of different perspectives on race.

I always become obsessed with stuff that was popular many years ago so I have like, nobody to talk with about it anymore cause I'm late to the party.

This literally happens ALL the time and it's super unfortunate.

Anyone else have this? I feel alone ahahaha.

Somewhat with me. I seem to keep getting drawn to older anime and such from 2006-ish.

Here is something from a Funimation show from around that time. The show was called Vermillion Pleasure Night. There are a few skits I like that I don't think I can post here.

Hmm...

For movies I would have to say Tamala2010: A punk cat in space (hands down in my top 5 favorite movies) and the Plague Dogs, both are fairly difficult to find films outside of the internet and both are amazing films (well, Tamala2010 is amazing but basic)

I know a few music albums that are essentially lost media/rare media at this point. One is the band Troubadour Record, this is a band of old sound designers and my goodness, they make some amazing music (my personal favorite is their album TOURS, heck, the album art alone is enough to make me love it!) and the other is an album called Escape Goat, a japanese album that blew me outta my socks when I heard it (the intro song rainbow juice is my favorite song in the album :3)

Did anyone else ever play Ribbit King?

It's been years since I've played it on Gamecube, but I remember enjoying it at the time.

I always seem to fall in love with media that's not well know, or a least not in my country.

My all time favourite comic book series is called W.I.T.C.H., which also doubles as a TV series. Some people might know of it here, but it certainly wasn't popular in my country. I first discovered the TV show by watching Cartoon Network many years ago, then went exploring on the internet and found out it originated as a comic book series. I occasionally re-watch or re-read it now, as both the comic and tv show has ended. In fact I'm re-watching the first season right now. I just love the art style and the setting that it's in.

There's another show to remind you guys of. Amimals of Farthing Wood. It's about a pack of animals, lead by a fox, that migrate after their homeland, the Farthing Wood, was being destroyed for more land to build towns. It appears to be a show exclusive to the United Kingdom, but I don't know how I got to see it on VHS here in the US.

one of my all time favorite movies is the anime movie colorful but it’s not very well known

I've heard of it and I think they showed it once where I live but I never got to see it unfortunately :(

Talking about unknown anime, Please Save My Earth is awesome. It's significantly shorter than the manga but I think it's still a watch since the manga seems OOP in English.
