This is going to be one of the weirdest theories out there, but here we go anyway.
Lyle. Bang. You know him. He's that dodgy insurance guy who now works for the Happy Home Academy. But what made him dodgy back then and is he still dodgy today? Let's see.
An otter selling life insurance? Meh, fair enough. He's dressed up in a fancy suit of sorts but so are all the other businessmen in the Animal Crossing world. He's also wearing glasses... unlike any other character in the series (excluding DJ K.K. but we'll get to that later)! Now then... why?
A dodgy insurance guy has to look dodgy, and perhaps being the only character to wear glasses is the answer. See, this covers up certain facial features... pretty much just anything around the eyes, so it's difficult to get an idea of what Lyle is really like when his face is obstructed, lowering his trustworthiness.
However, what if something just went horribly wrong in the Animal Crossing world and an animal wasn't perfect. Perhaps Lyle is myopic, hyperopic or astigmatistic and just needs prescription lenses to not be stumbling around the place? Well, tough. That's not the case. Just have a look here:
(This would have taken up less room if I'd put them horizontally. Oh well.)
Do you see the difference?! Lyle's eyesight is fine... probably. The point is that his lenses aren't any crazy prescription.
So, here we go 'round in a loop. Why is he wearing glasses? Perhaps he just wants to be a swiggity-swaggity hipster like DJ K.K.? The thing is, Lyle isn't a swiggity-swaggity hipster. He's Lyle.
To end this theory off, let's think of a rational reason...
What a small train wreck that was.

Lyle is broken and confused.
What a small train wreck that was.
