Gulliver had been to the post office ten times already that day and the girl behind the counter just sat there...It didn't help he never bothered to enter said post office. If he did, surely she would talk to him. Gulliver's stomach began churning with anxious waves, a flash of bashful red appeared on his beak. He sighed and sat on the ground outside. There had to be an easier way.
"You gotta be kidding! I knew that shrimp overcharged me five bells." Rudy the cat scowled at his T&T Mart receipt and threw it in his bag. Ah well, it wouldn't be the first time the Nooks swiped coinage. At least he'd gotten the last two bottles of melon soda. He popped the cap off one and took a long swig, savoring the sweet bubbly goodness. Suddenly he noticed someone familiar sitting in front of the post office. "What it do sailor-bro? If your face were any longer, I'd mistake you for Pete!"
"Eep!" Gulliver jumped up and brushed himself off. "I, uh, I just wanted to make sure no landsharks came by since my last visit and..." He couldn't continue. That lie was too outlandish, the truth wouldn't hurt. Rudy was a good guy so it probably wouldn't end up all over town. "Aw crustaceans! It's that pretty girl in the post office." Sheepishly, the sailor patted down his ruffled feathers and hung his head. Here he was the big tough man of ocean and sea, brought to a blushing mess by a pretty face. "She's downright nautical and I can't say two words to her! I don't know what to do..."
Rudy mulled his friend's story over for a moment and nodded understandingly. "We've all been there. I get nervous around hot girls too, even with my glorious sculpted looks. Pelly's really nice though so you got it easy. Hmm, what to say...what to do...I GOT IT!" The brown cat pulled out the second bottle of soda from his bag and eagerly handed it to Gulliver. "Girls like getting letters. Pelly's got to love them since she works at the post office right? So give her a message in a bottle! I heard that's how pirates communicated to their lady loves. You follow me?"
"RUDY. You are a genius! Why didn't I think of this before?...And how'd you know melon was my favorite flavor? This is perfect! Instead of giving letters to be delivered to other folks, she'll be floored to get one addressed to her!" Gulliver's eyes got their bright gleam back. Wild sea monsters couldn't keep him from chugging down the soda. He borrowed a piece of paper from Rudy and wrote a heartfelt greeting of flirtation. Soon it was curled delicately inside the bottle. The sailor felt their plan couldn't go wrong. It had to work!
Pelly finally finished sorting all the Mayor's letters to be saved when the door chime rang. "Hello, welcome to the Post Office! How may I help you?" She turned to see a sailor who vaguely reminded her of Pete...was it his feathers? Perhaps that's why he seemed somewhat charming. He cleared his throat and handed her a green glass bottle with some paper rolled inside. "Can you do me a favor and deliver this to a girl named Pelly?" He winked and ran out before she could say anything else. It was for...her?
She looked around to make sure no one was around. A shy smile grew on her bill as she gently pulled the message out. Could it be that Pete had him deliver this to her? Her heart began to beat one hundred miles an hour as she unrolled the paper. Suddenly her excitement turned to confusion. Pelly read the note which only had one awkward sentence:
Hi...I like your face...and the rest of you too.
