Idk how this happened but, as I played animal crossing with my boyfriend he managed to get three of MY villagers on his island randomly. Kid Cat, O'Hare and Merry. They all mentioned they came from my island and knew me. Has this ever happened to anyone else or... are we just that close?

It always happens with anyone who has visited a person’s island. It’s nothing to do with the closeness of two people. Villagers are often picked up from the void.

To expand on Croconaw's answer (who is correct), villagers that you have voided go into your Move-Out Queue. those in the MOQ have a chance to get transferred to someone else's Move-In Queue (MIQ) when you play online together (you visit their island or vice versa), and the MIQ is where the game pulls villagers from to autofill plots that have been empty for too long. ☺️

i believe they only get queued/"voided" like this if you don't arrange to have another player come and pick up your villager when they move out (or vice versa). your boyfriend would only be getting your villagers if he is placing down new lots/moving someone out and having an empty lot and then not filling the lot himself by either visiting NMT islands or collecting someone else's moving-out villager to "reserve" the lot...if that makes sense.

i remember The Void used to be a BIG deal in new leaf since you had less control over who moved in and out of your town, but i wasn't very online for acnl so i didn't experience it firsthand. but people used to take voided villagers very seriously lol
