My (more important) thoughts on TBT

Interesting ideas. Do remember that TBT has been going strong for 4 years plus already, and that takes quite a bit... don't want to change the formula too much.

For example, ranks, although they don't mean a ton to you or me right now, 2 or 3 years ago, when we were new members, it was cool ranking up and a nice little side thing to do at the forum.
I remember how fun it was to rank up, but that comes at a much greater cost. I also remember posting spam for the sole purpose of ranking.
Not everyone who ranks up spams. And that's reason enough to keep ranks.

So ranks should be removed because you spammed for them?

  • Get rid of ranks, straight up, it's a no-brainer. Less spam, less confusion, less rank-ism, etc. We aren't (or at least shouldn't be) the NSider.
  • Trash some of the unnecessary boards and combine them. (i.e. Forum Games, Advertisements)
  • Trash console-specific boards and create three new ones. (Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony)
  • Make Brewster's Cafe a sub-forum of Off Topic.
  • Make TBT Marketplace a sub-forum of The Bell Tree HQ.
  • Do we honestly need like, five Animal Crossing boards? Condense them and create sub-forums. I've always been 'pro-trashing the Animal Crossing theme', but I know that won't happen. I just minimize the entire category anyway.
  • I dunno, we already have an Affiliates section, do we really need an Advertisements one, too? It doesn't make sense.
  • Revise the rules, I break five to six of them every day.
  • Remove the Bell System. It didn't work before, I do not have any confidence in it this time around.
  • What is going on with the site? I remember when we finally got that up, it was kind of exciting. I think it'd help the forum overall if we made it, I dunno, active again? Maybe changed the theme slightly? I dunno, something.
i agree with most everything you just said.

Not just him, a lot of other people also.

No, but because you and I both know that people will and have spammed to rank up. It's as simple as that.

Is it that hard to ignore? Eventually everyone realizes there's no point in doing that... but without ranks a lot of people would leave early on and never become good active members at TBT. If we made TBT unwelcoming to new members, then eventually there'd be no one left... since almost everyone leaves eventually... if you try getting to know newer members, and remembering you were once in there shoes, it's not so bad... yeah, they may not be as smart as you sometimes, and they might spam sometimes too... but without them TBT doesn't exist down the road.

You're saying that ranks give us good members?

Active ones? Yes. Good ones? No.

But at times, it also causes small rank wars. As in calling new members n00bs or idiots because they're new to the forum. A small version of what happened to NSider.

Well, you admitted you did it when you were new. Are you a good member?

I know I did it when I was newer. Am I a good member?

You have to say at least one of us is. ;)

We both are, and yeah, we both did it, but we're smart people who have intelligent thoughts who use good grammar.

Most of these people aren't.

Oh, I wouldn't say we were going STRONG for a lot of that time.

We were more going sideways. I remember several instances last summer where if I didn't make a topic, no one would post.

Or when we had the same ten people visiting and that was it.
