My best guess is that they're both scum since they're arguing so much. They probably want to make themselves look like they're on opposing sides, when in reality, they're both in the mafia.

Nah, it 100% works with experienced players. I get what you're saying about the time frame, but people tend to conform to a playstyle that suits them, especially if they haven't played in a long time. I am very confident that shorter comments never suited you
