Me and my sister REALLY want a chinchilla, we looked and they can live up to 20 years sooo no. So I’m looking for a small pet that I can let out of its cage and explore, I don’t need to constantly be towering over it. Anyone got suggestions for that kinda pet, in summary I want a pet that
• Has a lifespan of around 4ish years
• That can be let out of its cage and will sleep on my bed
• And not a rat, my family would definitely say no to a rat
I also have a cat and dog, but they won’t be in the same room as it

Edit: should’ve been more specific but I didn’t mean I’d sleep on the bed with it at night. I meant when I take it out of its cage, it might fall asleep on my lap or bed, my bad.

Get a rabbit, particularly flemish giants that have an avg lifespan of 5 years and can be litter box trained, and after it dies I hear their meat can be quite tasty.

Noooo this hurt my soul. My giant rabbit is 8 years old and terribly high maintenance. She isn't an easy pet.

If you want a casual pet I'd suggest a hamster instead.

I'd definitely recommend a hamster, especially a gold syrian or fancy hamster. Syrians are TYPICALLY more lax and easy to get along with, but fancies are more playful. I've had two fancies and they lived around 3 years and were fairly easy to deal with

I also have a dog and three cats and none of them bothered my hamsters if they were in their ball running around, but it really depends on your other pets

I've also had guinea pigs, but they were SUPER difficult to tend to lol
always getting themselves into trouble, hard to tell what they need... hamsters or similar animals are really the way to go if you want something easy

and I've heard some people say that gerbils are easy and fun, but the only gerbil I ever had was mean and constantly escaped his cage LOL so it probably depends on the animal itself, too

I don't have any pet recommendations since I only keep cats and dogs, but I can say that if you're gonna get a small pet it's prob not a good idea to let it sleep on your bed w you. not just because they're small and can be squished easily, but also because they can get lost and fall off the bed, or even possibly use your bed as a giant litter box.

if you're gonna get a small pet it's fine to have it out during the day but I would seriously recommend leaving it in its cage, or some enclosure it can't escape from, at night.

I recommend a lovely aquarium of tropical fish. They're very pretty, easy to care for, and best of all they don't make a mess on the rug or bark at night, and most apartment landlords has no issue with their renters keeping them.

How about a ferret?
i dont think thatd work for them, they can live up to 10 years

but i second not letting a small pet out at night to sleep with you. even my large cat who sleeps in the bed with us sometimes gets caught up in the sheets and under our feet, so i cant even imagine what would happen to a small pet

plus pets are pretty random and wont just sleep all night in one spot, my cat gets up randomly through the night and wanders around before coming back, they can and will get into what they want

I’ve seen people recommend hedgehogs, and two things
1. PETS HEDGEHOGS ARE A THING
2. I have a irrational fear of hedgehogs spikes 😂

I don't know why you would want such a short life span. :(

I wish they had longer ones. :(

A mouse only lives for about 4 years, and they are beautiful sweet pets.
It's just so sad when they go. :(

They are clean, friendly and are alot like cats.

I would like an opossum but I have no idea their life span. Or really anything so. My cats and dogs wouldn't like it though. I will probably never own a dog again but cats are forever in my life.

Aquariums are awesome! If you go this route though, PLEASE do your research! Don't just get a betta fish and put it in a bowl. Don't use anything smaller than a 5 gallon aquarium, and make sure to cycle the aquarium beforehand (takes about a month) before you put any living creatures in. And don't keep the light on 24/7. SOrry to be annoying but fish abuse is so prevalent

Regardless of which pet you get, you really need to do your research on how much they cost for daily care and how much it would cost to take them to the vet. It's also important to consider if the vets in your area have experience in treating some of the more exotic pets. Some states also have special rules on exotic pets and require a permit or they might not be legal. It's also important to think about who or where you are buying the pet from.

Since you said you and your sister want to share a pet, who is responisble for what? How are you both contributing to the care of the pet and are you both sharing the expenses equally? Who is going to take care of it if one of you move out?

Also fish are a lot of work. Even a small tank requires regular cleaning and it takes up a lot of time. Do your research on what can go wrong with tanks so your fish can live healthy and long.

id recommend a bearded dragon !! they live 10-15 years (not quite 4 but not quite 20) i have one myself. hes sweeter than my cat and so so cuddly. theyre maintenance can be a bit expensive however its not something u have to tower over them constantly w (once u buy everything its a breeze). theyre hardy so they can get through ur mistakes. they do eat bugs, (not sure if ur into that). i bring mine out of his cage all the time. he loves to run around. right now since its winter hes a little lazy n sluggish so he likes to just find a little crevice to snuggle into on my bed and will sleep for hours. hes never bitten me either. i think theyre so sweet n will just sleep on ur bed (or explore !! they love playing w mirrors hehe)

I agree with this so much.

Pets are a lot of work and a lot of money. I feel like a lot of people don't realize this which is why it's upsetting when some just choose not to pay vet bills because they're so expensive or give it away when it pees on the carpet or something. You gotta be prepared for the worst or just get a stuffed animal instead.

Not directing this at OP by any means. More so venting. Pets obviously aren't like children but they're almost as bad sometimes. They're a big decision, despite the temptation because they're cute and fun.
