New terraforming information

I wonder what the purpose of the fourth layer is then? If we can’t get to the top the. I believe we can’t create a waterfall from it so what’s to point?

Valid question. Maybe just to create a border/wall/mountain of sorts?? I don’t really have any better guesses at the moment ;ェ;

- River mouths cannot be modified.
- Beaches cannot be modified.
- Water cannot be placed within one grass tile of the beach.
- Fourth tiers can be created but we can't reach them. (A message appears saying that it's too dangerous.)

I kinda expected as much. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not too disappointed by the limitations. It seems we are still able to split our island up into many little islands, which is very exciting.

I had heard about this. This is why I'm determined to have a map type with a southern and eastern outlet from the beginning. I'm glad we got some form of confirmation about how high we can build up though.

those limits are what i suspected they would and sound about right, and it still leaves so much room for creative freedom! i think my preference would be a southern and eastern outlet, but i would have to see what maps i get to be sure.

If true, and if I'm understanding correctly, we can theoretically cover the entire map in water with the exception of one grass tile before the beach.

i know this is a theoretical situation, but if the resident services could be placed on the beach then this assumption would be true. since it appears it can't be then we won't actually be able to conveniently make our entire map water with just a ring of beach. it would also be difficult to complete the fossil and bug collections as well. it would severely limit some features of the game, so i imagine that things have been put in place to only make a body of water a certain width. i wonder now if bridges can be elongated, or maybe if a river is too wide then you can't place a bridge?

thank you for the information! i don?t really see a point in a fourth tier if you can?t access it tbh lol

I'd say its just there for the sake of being there, mostly for aesthetics. Like you want a house on a top level, but want some cliffs on the one side still or something.

I'll be looking for East Outlet since I enjoyed having an East outlet in New Leaf.

Good stuff to know! I'd like to know how early/late you get access to the landscaping tools, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Permit earned through Nook Miles?

I haven't put the effort into finding an official source yet, but I've been seeing a lot of talk about the Terraforming Permit being purchased through Nook Miles.

(It's not exactly what I expected, but it would make sense: the Direct stated that it unlocks after developing your Island, and having enough Miles saved up presumably means having played/developed quite a lot)

Yeah it does make sense, since it would mean you would have done a variety of things, meaning a new extra feature to sink your teeth in woumd be both desirable and at the right "learning curve" wise. Well, as far as you can speak of that, but I think you can. It would help if you have a better understandment of placement and game mechanics when you start doing serious renovation work.

That’s really interesting - I didn’t imagine that nook miles would be the way to unlock it, but it definitely makes sense! It probably is a good show of how far you have gone into the game. I imagined something else like how many shops you’ve unlocked, upgrades of house and RS, full town, etc.

i've seen this too! the way they worded it in the direct makes me think it won't be available to purchase right at the start of the game and will probably become available after spending a while playing and opening up everything else

I made a post about this a little while ago haha ☆
I'm hoping bridges can be made to fill the width of your river, whichever size you choose, small or big!
Longer bridges were really sought after in NL, I know it would've really helped me out since my river was fat in the place I needed the bridge ( p′︵‵。) really want longer bridges in NH!!!

Updated main post to reflect the new information regarding possibly purchasing the permit with Nook Miles.

Thanks for weighing in everyone!

My guess the requirements are likely certain Nook Miles Tasks completed, all facilities 'built', and a certain amount of villagers on the island. And maybe so many days passed as well.

I doubt that the whole area could be covered in water. I'm sure there are some limitations.
You still need adequate space for villager houses and amenities.

It would make sense that landscaping is unlocked with a significant amount of nook miles / time / bells spent, because it's a significant feature that can make a big change in your town. It's highly unlikely and unlike Nintendo that they would give you that much power that early, progression wise.
