Super excited about Joan's apprentice/niece or whatever, she looks super cute! The new villagers look nice as well, but does anyone else think they seem too cartoon-ish? The big eyes, bright colors and so on.
I agree. The bear cub is a little too kawaii for me, and others have commented here and elsewhere that they're a bit too neon (though I love the goat). I think this is what gets me about Nat Jr. They've cutefied him to the point that people can't even recognize what animal he is! I don't blame anyone for not seeing at first that he is also a chameleon and mistaking him for another type of lizard, pokemon, dragon, or dinosaur! To me he looked like a devil at first (with the hooves)! I think if you've made your character so cutesy that they don't resemble their animal anymore, or don't really look like a real animal, you've gone too far.
I'm probably a bit more tolerant than others are about animals not having natural coloration – I know that some people gravitate toward cartoony naturalistic villagers like Beau, Goldie, Roald, Poppy, Eunice, Savannah, Winnie, Molly, Lolly, Apollo, Melba, Ruby, Flora, etc. I do like fun weird ones like Ribbot, Mira, Ankha, Kabuki, Bluebear, Lucky, Tia, Gigi, Eugene, Merengue, Willow, Hopper etc. But I still find some a bit too much for me (Chrissy, Francine, Julian, Apple, Cookie, Fuschia, Stitches, Charlise, Gayle, for a few).
I'm slightly worried that this emphasis on the cutesy + the younger NPCs + the manga means they're aiming this game squarely at preteen elementary school kids. I hope that doesn't mean bland cutesy personalities, simplified systems, and a lack of depth.
