you can't pick it up period...if you could take it from the hero time don't you think gannon would've just had some guy swipe while ]Ganon only needed Link to gather the stones for him in order to allow the Temple of Time to open up so the Master Sword was accessible(Which was pretty much like the final key to the Sacred Realm)

The Master Sword itself may be like the sword in the stone, however, in the first Zelda you just had to be strong and wise enough to be able to obtain it. Which is what I think it is more leaned towards. Its not like you have to be that special guy that comes around every 100 years.

Final note, the Master Sword was thrown from Link's hand while he wasnt sleeping. Past the ring of fire. I think that Ganon could just take it from him while he's sleeping if he wanted, but Ganon really doesnt have a use for the Master Sword, except to try to prevent its power to give the final blow to evil.
