Ok so they made this new thing called Nintendo switch online where we have to pay for different features. The features are online play, nes online play, a phone app and save data cloud.

So I have to pay to play online games like ssb online, arms online multiplayer, Mario kart online multiplayer, Splatoon, Fortnite? Like the Xbox live thing?

Oh and "phone app" they made, really Nintendo? Why can't they just add a feature in the system for voice chat? We already have apps like discord.

I was really excited and even planned to buy a switch asap but this just disappointed me. What do you think?

They announced this over a year ago lol. The only one on that list you wouldn't have to pay to play is Fortnite since its free. But yea, all the others you'd have to pay for

I honestly don't mind it all that much because it is not that expensive, but I'm sort of disappointed with the fact that apparently, to continue accessing your NES, you need to do a weekly online login, which is fine if you're at home most of the time, but if you're someone who goes on vacations or takes long business trips, good luck. Also, if you do not re-subscribe before/on the expiration date, your cloud saves will be deleted immediately, and there will be no grace period. I love Nintendo like crazy, but their recent decisions for online are leaving a very sour taste in my mouth. Hopefully, they'll do like what Microsoft did, and change it soon, possibly after they see results of who actually buys the online, because something tells me they won't be making as much money as they thought.

Honestly, it was inevitable for this to happen, ever since Microsoft first rolled out Live as a paid service. Nintendo just took the longest to convert over.

It's not free for Nintendo to run online servers. Just like it's not free for roads to exist. It costs money. Roads are fixed with taxes. Online play is paid for by the users that, well, use it.

Oh I saw the trailer of 2 days ago lol

Worst idea ever. They had fine, sometimes disconnecting stuff for years and now they feel like they have to jump this bandwagon... why? Are they really losing that much money on the console or are they just desperate to keep up with current "trends". Also I love how they are like "lol let's give out random NES stuff" when you can get that other means. Why not lower Switch price (and of its games instead so people can afford it if they are that hungry..?

No, running stuff is not free but do they really need to force this when we already pay for the console and games. And no it's not overly expensive per se, I'm just against the principle. It's like telling us to pay for even open a web browser and then you gotta pay per minute for how long you use it or such. Please no.

Agreed. It's not that expensive but Nintendo doesn't know about internet at all.

That, and they are getting more and more greedy with all the app games and now this. Not a brilliant idea, not at all. But sure if people want to support all this it's their choice.

the thing about it not being much or only 20 a year and less than others, is that lots of people will think "ah yeah i see it offers nothing and is bad and evil but it's cheap so I pay it anyway" .. small amounts multiplied by a lot of consumers is a lot of money grabbed from our pockets for nothing. it's really weird how smash players aren't vocal against this (tho they seem to not have money problems judging by amiibo situation) since they are literally being targeted by this paid online, as it gets dragged out just before smash launches.

also I don't think it will stay at 20 a year. watch them increase it over time with every new console they add and justify it with that.

imagine the positive press and sales increase they would've gotten if they announced they cancelled paid online. that would have been a clever marketing move, but no..
they could've then said online will be free but the old games will be subscription based and literally noone would have complained and everyone would've probably gotten atleast a one month subscription. but the greed didn't allow that thought process I guess.

btw.. don't just downvote the US video for the online service I think it's more effective if the downvotes are on the japanese video so they actually see it.
I'm bummed I can't play splatoon anymore, a game I payed for. will probably finally do the singleplayer now and resell it after.

I mean, I'm not such a big fan of this whole idea too, then again, if the day comes where I
finally get a Switch, then I don't want to renounce on the online modus, as I would like to
play online, especially Splatoon 2. After all, I'm glad that it's not that expensive (20€ for
one year is acceptable for me). But yeah, I hope that Nintendo will work on this.

^Thank you shunishu *bows*

And yeah exactly, people will pay because they will be desperate to have multiplayer because otherwise games sucks unless it's Skyrim/visual novel/etc. And yes they sure wanna be in a bad light and be "trendy capitalists" go ahead and people who can pay will because they feel they absolutely needs to be connected online. And yeah they will probably increase it in due time since they can and as long as people can afford it they will because yeah it's soooo expensive to run stuff and we're doing bad.

Yeah how about cancelling it and make the other things more affordable to others?

*rolls eyes*

I hope they cancel this stupid idea. Most of the people are disliking it. The dislike ratio in their video is really high. Nintendo is trying too hard to be "trendy". There isn't even YouTube or a web browser, instead of adding these things and making the switch better they just want money. Nintendo is getting too greedy.

A friend of mine will share online service with me so no need to pay $20 for that thing.

Yeah, they are. But sure next we will have to pay to even open the console or pay to use my nintendo or whatever. Seriously they need to stop this. They really don't think we pay enough for console, games, broadband connection etc... do they no?

I'm only using it for online gaming and Splatfest really. The NES Online library is apparently the originally planned rental service where you can temporarily download the game and then they take it away from you. And WHY wouldn't a $20 month to download what you want to keep Virtual Console service work? Xbox Live does it with Game Pass...and you can keep what you download even if you can't renew.

So classic games? Not worthwhile. Cloud saves are also an issue. Games like Pokemon and Splatoon require effort be put in so if they didn't want people to cheat the system by restoring back ups they should not have done P2P and store online ranking on the Switch itself. Plus third party developers are told they can opt out.

In other words, there's always a chance only single player first party Nintendo games and a few select multiplayer titles that can't cheat the system will be the ONLY games you can back up. Overall, I have to agree with the negative crowd: This service is a mess and Nintendo is proving they don't know how to handle modern online gaming.

The only silver lining is the $20 price tag. Cheaper then competitors. Though, like I said with all the mess going on I'm just gonna pay so I can keep participating in Splatfest. Those are my ranty thoughts.

^^^^ Yes this this and everything else you pointed out. I don't think people care about NES games, you can get those on 3DS (idk about Wii U but.. yeah) and cloud save thing is a mess too... They really are scary of homebrew stuff are they lmao.

Yeah you can get them on the Wii U too. I'm more of a Super Nintendo guy myself. If they did do a Game Pass type thing for various system libraries I'd definitely go for some of my favorite Super Nintendo titles. I wish several more had come to the 3DS, actually. Oh well.

I really do hope they eventually start getting with the times though. I grew up with a Game Boy in my pocket and Super Nintendo controller ready to roll at a friend's house so I've been supporting Nintendo all my life so sometimes having to be so critical of them makes me kinda sad. A "How the mighty have fallen" kinda thing.

^Yeah my first ninty console was a gameboy color and I've always liked their handhelds. Sure 3ds had a region lock and did some dumb publishing decisions with 3rd party games etc. but honestly they've been sticking to me(nintendo). And yeah I've never been a a fan of "tv-stuck" consoles and this one being a random hybrid with nothing overly exclusive exciting and now this.. nope sorry boys.

Always played on the go or like everywhere aha, and they had alright prices on their stuff. Not gonna pay overprice for some random hybrid when they are making these dumb online things.

It's getting worse and worse in my eyes. I'm afraid if their garbage online service is gonna hurt switch sales because of this monstrosity. Let's also consider that not everyone follows up closely on Nintendo like us so it's gonna be confusing for other people who decided to pay for this service. Cloud service should've been a basic feature in all honesty, NES games are just underwhelming, the phone app, complicated voice chat, and so on. Man, it feels like Nintendo are making simple things complicated than they're supposed to. These features might turn them away even from using the console further! Nintendo really needs help getting their online off to a great start. More and more people are using online features and with how it's faring on the switch, it's not looking pretty.

I mean, Microsoft and Sony have been doing this since, like forever, so I don't mind.

Also, like a bunch free NES games reworked to be online, and insane deals?! Sign me up!
