Nintendo switch "online"

Honestly it's not THAT bad, it's much more cheaper than Microsoft and Sony's online service.

If the money is also used to improve Nintendo's internet then sure as hell I'd definitely support the $20 a year (which again is $1.70 a month)

I mean, Microsoft and Sony have been doing this since, like forever, so I don't mind.

Also, like a bunch free NES games reworked to be online, and insane deals?! Sign me up!

When hopefully these "special deals" will be worth while.

I'm glad that keeping busy playing through Okami HD has put a stop to my Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online interest because I think this service is a rip-off and it feels wrong paying for it. Nintendo's online services are so mediocre that people have not been satisfied with them for free. To begin charging for their lackluster service takes a lot of gall. "It's only $20". Lol. It shouldn't even be that. This service is not worth paying for. We're being ripped off. Just because we're being ripped off less than Sony or Microsoft (who, at least, have significantly better online services) doesn't mean we're not being ripped off.

The Direct was such a disaster. Nintendo has never had anything to show with this service since they first revealed it was going to be a thing back in January of 2017. I really thought they'd at least have a small last-minute surprise in the Direct, but nope. Nothing. Nothing at all. They're just like "BTW, you now have to pay for what you've been getting for free for twelve years lol"

I can't believe they couldn't even remotely tease a future potential addition of non-NES games to the service. NES games are not special. They are not hard to get, or at least not the ones that you'll see in this service. Nintendo has been making NES games available to us through many different methods for the last sixteen years. Any of the NES games they're going to offer that I want to play, I've already had a billion opportunities to do so, and would rather purchase them individually rather than have them tied to a subscription service that will someday go up in smoke.

Again, Nintendo has quite some gall. And this will "succeed". But not because the service is good or worth paying for. Only because people won't want to be restricted from playing the games they love online. It's Nintendo being a greedy business. Nintendo is supposed to be the one that is "special", but they aren't. They're just like everyone else... Except they're behind and still expecting people to pay. That feels worse, actually.

I agree it's wrong for the NES and non multiplayer games to be paid for by the subscription, but its pathetic that everyone's whinging about paying less then two dollars a month. As people said earlier these services cost Nintendo money to maintain, it's hardly a bandwagon for them to jump on and is more likely a necessity. I had an xbox back in the day and paid for online before playstation did the same thing and while my playstation friend laughed that I paid for online I couldn't care less.

The fact that it's so dirt cheap and Nintendo gamers have had such a huge grace period before this is being implemented is what makes me so confused as to why theres such backlash (besides the NES and offline I mentioned prior).

In short, it was inevitable. Get over it and stop whining.

Honestly, at the end of the day, Nintendo is in it for the business (Sadly). Maybe one day, we'll see some changes, like SNES and other consoles, and a true native voice chat (even if it's only with friends to protect children online from trolls and psychos, idc). But these will come with time.

What I'm most upset with are the offers. Here's what the special offers are so far, and there's only 2:

a) Members with a 12-month subscription get an exclusive outfit in Splatoon 2. That's right. One. Outfit.

b) Members will be allowed to buy the NES controllers. What irks me so much is that they are not compatible with any games; even ones that could maybe use them, like side-scrollers or maybe even Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Yet, they are a full 59.99$.

And that's it. That's all we get so far. No discounts. No additional My Nintendo exclusives. Nothing. I'm still buying it, because Splatoon 2 is my maybe, and I got MK8DX about a month ago and I'm loving it. Plus, I have not played very many NES games so far. But really?! These are special offers. PS4 players get constant discounts and sometimes even a free game. What I was hoping for was maybe if Nintendo would let Members play a select Switch exclusive for a whole months, or allow us to buy games with the Gold Points.

Overall, I'm underwhelmed.

If there was some sort of "Once a month: Here's five games...pick which one you want free of charge!!!" then I would totally say that would be a decent special offer. Back before Club Nintendo died out, in it's final years, I got several of the GB/GBC games in my virtual console collection for free what with the rewards catalog that did that at the time.

Or was that MyNintendo prior to the release of the Switch? I don't remember...all I know is last free VC I got was Wario Land 3 in 2016...

Yes yes thank you. And yeah would I ever get a Switch for some goddamn reason I'd never even think of paying for they dirty methods and "suddenly" implementation of Internet, I've my 3ds and plenty of great on and offline stuff for that, as well as my laptop.

Also yeah that NES thing and cloud save.. No just no doesn't make it worth it.

And yes I'm gonna whine because a) I'm against the principle of doing that, I can put my $20 on donating to charity, buy myself food and clothes or something better than supporting fishy companies b) their "offers" can go die in a dumpster c) I already pay for my consoles, games and internet itself, I don't wanna pay even more just because they suddenly feels the need to "maintain" servers. Stop it.

I'm not bothered about the pricing at all, it's just the features that come with it are underwhelming... what about gamecube games, gba games, maybe even ds games? I'm all meh about the NES games. What annoys me the most is that the save cloud data does not support Splatoon 2 :/ the price is fine, but what we get in return for the price is not worth it imo.

I dunno, people are flipping out on this and I can see why but I'm just sat here accepting the fact that I gotta pay. Yes it's a shame but not really a big deal to me

Tbf someone else is paying for me rn as we have the family plan with 8 people but I would've bought a membership myself if that wasn't a thing

Man I've been complaining about this all week. I was really mad when I found out the price jumped to $35 for multiple accounts that want the online service because my sister and I both use the console. Nintendo hasn't done anything that justifies charging for the online. It's so far behind in features compared to what the other consoles offer. The cloud saves suck, don't give a **** about NES, voice chat through an app is a joke, no invite or party system making us join our friend's matches in progress in games like Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and no dedicated servers. Plus we've all been playing the multiplayer for like a year for free and now they're charging for it without making major improvements? I don't think so. I really want to play the games online but I kind of want to boycott the service by not getting it.

I'm confused on how it's gonna work. I read somewhere that your online subscription is only for one profile? Like if I wanted to go online on a different profile it would need a separate subscription? Also the cloud thing confuses me, is it just cloud storage? I have a 200gb sd card in my switch so I'm good there. lmao

I think you can buy several ones if you're a family playing or stuff but I assume you can have several profiles?

I guess cloud storage yes which I don't get why they even offer along with dumb games you can get other means so yeah...

The cloud service is for backing up game save files. It is the only way to do that on the Nintendo Switch.

I say its the stupid idea that nintendo has to do is make people pay online even those people are ready paying for internet, so its like paying internet twice now.
Nintendo always had online free and so now they don't FOR THE SWITCH I mean nintendo already are billionaires by selling so many copies of botw, SMO, splatoon 2 and other new popular games on the switch. I mean it stop it nintendo your already are rich nintendo people you don't need to take more money from people lives just to play online.

Tried accessing my Aus account while using JP free trial and it didn't work. Looks like I'll be mostly playing on my Japanese account from now on because I'd be saving $3 per monthly fee... unless local eshop cards go on sale, then the yearly fee would be around the same. I won't start losing money until 10 months down the line.

I think it's not too expensive so I probably will get it as soon as AC comes to the Switch. I don't need it for Botw and Odyssee.

It's a peer to peer internet connection, there is not dedicated nintendo servers for their online service... so yahh it's not money that's being used to improve their "internet".

And sure $20 is cheap for now but for what you're getting... you're not getting much. I'm pretty sure it will increase in price over the years and will end up matching Sony and Microsoft's pricing while still not offering much because it's Nintendo and they can.

Also with Sony's PSN+, there's other offers included with buying their online service, ie: free games as well as a better cloud saving mechanic.

I won't be getting the online service until Animal Crossing comes out. But after reading reddit and watching youtube, it is worrisome that Nintendo will cut out content from games and put it behind a paywall of the online services.

Especially with the announcement of Animal Crossing coming to the switch. I can see this game pushing many to buy the online services seeing as it's a game about completing catalogues and trading.

"Come join us online for insert event here and grab the exclusive insert event item!!"
(For online subscribers only, sorry you non subscribing plebs!)

On another note... if they were to release SNES, N64 or Gamecube games on the switch, I'd drop $20 in a second.

More games are to be added to the NES library every month, seems to be 3 at a time.

In addition, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Arms and Mario Tennis Aces support talking to random people online via the app groans

Wow random NES games you can easily other ways? Lolol. Also using an app just for that voice chat seems stupid.

And yeah @Sholee, they do because they can and people will just jump the train becauase they want the full whole thing and don't consider the cons lol :|

I was considering getting it but I don't play online very much anyways and I have an NES with a buncha games so it's pretty pointless for me to pay for something I'll barely use.

Although my friend just recently offered to make a family plan and put me on it so when I get a Switch I wouldn't have to pay to play online. (Bless his heart)
I'm not 100% sure if that's doable, with two accounts being on two systems, but I guess it's worth a shot anyways.
